Have to travel to New York
OK here is my problem. I have to go to New York for family reasons this coming weekend. I am driving and have a TX CCL. I will be OK all the way until I hit New York then as best I can figure I have to throw the hand gun out the window and pick it up on my way back. I believe NY law states that I can not even travel with my handgun locked in the trunk. Yea I know you have to be caught to be convicted but with all the news lately I am not sure what to do. went up few year ago and had my gun with me the whole time, even stayed in NYC to see my daughter in a play at RCM hall. What would you guys do? I think I could have a shotgun in the car alright and even if you do not have to keep concealed it would sure cause trouble if I was pulled over.
I believe I can legally travel through NY with my gun locked in trunk if my end destination honors my TX permit. Trouble is I am stopping in NY. Do you chance it knowing that the odds are in your favor of not getting caught? Also knowing that odds of needing a gun in NY higher then probably here in Texas

Re: Have to travel to New York
Well if you are going through PA.....call a local gunsmith....leave your gun there for "cleaning" then pick it up on the way back out again. I live in VA and several of my friends have done this. When I travel to NY I go through Maryland and New Jersey....so I just leave mine at home.

It simply isn't worth risking a felony.
I know people have successfully left their handgun near the PA-NJ border for a gunsmith to clean. Pick it up on the way home. Depending upon your route, your problem states are MD, NJ, NY.

Depending on your route of travel, MD is not as much of a problem as others. On I-81, you are in MD for less than 15 minutes driving time. We go to PA regularly and I simply follow the the Federal transport rules while I'm driving through there. It goes without saying that you want to be extra special careful about the traffic rules in MD. I don't care if everyone is flying by me at 15 over the speed limit, they don't have TX plates on their car. I've probably made that trip through MD 25 times and have never been stopped or even come close to it.
I think that you would find gun smiths around Stroudsburg (I-80) a lot more willing to work with you than the ones around Phila (I-95). We were at the Delaware Water Gap this summer and found the people in the Stroudsburg area very friendly. The "hate Texas" mentality exists from Phila East through NJ and into NY. LEOs in NJ and NY are more likely than any place else in the country (in my opinion) to be on a power trip and just look for an excuse to use the full extent of the law against someone from Texas. Friends of ours while we lived in NJ have a son who is an LEO. "Nuff said.

And if you are going through NJ be careful about your ammo. IIRC, I think NJ bans hollow point ammo for non-LE.
I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

Re: Have to travel to New York
Thanks for the advice. As I will be getting in New York on Sunday finding a smith open is not too high. I have never been a big gambler so "chancing it' does not seem to be an option either. I was thinking about stopping at boarder and taken gun part then locking up the parts in separate cases. Still not legal I guess but certainly trying to do everything I can. but your right I can not change my plates. They still say Texas on them.

Legally, the serialized frame is the firearm. Everything else is just mechanical parts.

Re: Have to travel to New York
Though I have not yet tried it ( have not traveled to one of THOSE states in many years) I've heard of shipping it to your self in the last state you are in prior to getting to say.. NY... one of the UPS/ FEDEX shipping retail stores... and ship it to that same address addressed to your self..... done with business, stop in and pickup your package.
This is an unconfirmed internet forum suggestion I have not researched further due to lack of need... so take it for what it is, just an idea to look at.

Re: Have to travel to New York
You know with all the "hate Texans" mentality flying around up that way in this country...
I now understand why it is that I kinda have a slight irritation when I see license plates from those states, like NY, NJ, PA, MD, DC etc etc etc...
All they need to totally complete the offense down here is to slap an OBAMA 2012 sticker on their bumper, and a TxDPS trooper on their tail at the time waiting for the slightest offense...
Good luck on your short trip to NY...Try not to spend too much money up there...

I think the trip was already done. Thread was from December 19 last year.stevie_d_64 wrote:You know with all the "hate Texans" mentality flying around up that way in this country...
