CA: 50 shots fired at mall, no one hurt

On Saturday around 4:30 p.m. at a fashionable outdoor mall in Newport Beach, California (south of Los Angeles) a man reportedly fired about 50 shots from a rifle into the air and the ground. Apparently he didn't aim at anything specific. Two police officers took a 42-year-old man into custody. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

Police said the man lived in the area and did not have a known criminal record.

No one was injured, though the shooting caused panic in the mall.

Perhaps a failed attempt at "suicide by cop"?

The only explanations I can think or are mental illness or drug abuse. If the guy wanted to commit "suicide by cop," it didn't work.
