Prohibited places to carry weapon

#1

Post by no1texan »

I have been working at my current position for over 3 years. Rarely does a day pass that I don't think about the vulnerability of the general area for someone entering unnoticed from the street and robbing us. My office is located away from the entrance to our office area and so I would not know of an intruder until he made is way to my office or unless shots were fired. Because I work for a church every Monday morning there is significant cash counted in our office area and then taken to the bank. If an individual knew this, or cased the church for several weeks and wanted to attempt a robbery, there is not much stopping him.

Question I have is for my own protection I am considering applying for CHL. But if I get my CHL, will I be prohibited from carrying my weapon to my job because I work for a church? Also there is a day school in the same building but considerable distance from my office.

A church is not off limits, and if what you are calling a day school is just a day care then it is not off limits either unless one or the other is posted for 30.06.

You can reference pg 38 of the state provided chl law pamplet here - http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/internetfo ... chl-16.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

there is also a list in the chl check list section of this forum here - viewtopic.php?f=36&t=6994" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You should also check your employee handbook. If there is a 'no weapons' or 'no firearms' policy, you could be fired for carrying on the job. But whatever you do DO NOT ASK your HR department about any of this!!!! If you've looke through the entire policy and can't find it, then it's not there. Asking HR about it would tip them that they've overlooked something and then they'll add it (if they have misgivings about having concealed weapons onsite).

There are many of us on this forum that hold CHLs but are not allowed to carry at work. It's way less than ideal, but that fact has not deterred us. If you can qualify for it, go ahead and get your CHL regardless of the work policy.

no1texan - your post suggests that you are more than simply "considering" obtaining a CHL. Since you say rarely a day goes by that you are not thinking about security and the potential threats to safety in your various environments, and you have sought advice on the forum - I'd be willing to bet that you will have your CHL within 90 days. The CHL class would make an excellent stocking stuffer for you and your co-workers.

Have you discussed this with your management?
What do they think?

If I was in your shoes, I would consider having an open discussion about security with the people that employ me. Your concerns are VERY valid and the fact is that you are not the only one at risk. You could easily have the discussion about security without bringing up concealed carry. I would avoid the CC subject entirely, for fear of having them decide to put a "no chl" policy in writing...

:iagree: :iagree: :iagree: For every person that has a positive outcome bringing firearms and concealed carry up for discussion with their employer, there are 25 people with a negative outcome. That is one of those live wires that it is better off left alone.

Maybe a more effective solution would be the tactic of Joseph Kennedy, who would send a man to take the cash in the offering plates from all the Boston parishes, count it and write a check for that amount. It relieved the parishes of the security risk of all that cash, gave The Pop plenty of cash for "walking around money", make payoffs etc., and a cancelled check to prove a charitable donation to write off on his tax return!
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.
