Could you extend it to add 51% places, or would that make it too muddy? The threads on here show that there's lots of doubt on 51% places. I'm thinking the idea of this database is for me to know ahead of time if I can carry concealed at a certain place before I go there. So 30.06 or 51% would have the same effect.
I wouldn't change the domain though. If this thing grows into a national registry, then the domain will always show that it started out in Texas. :)

Maybe set it up as a 30.06/51% thing for Texas only but have future growth built in to make it a registry of places where concealed carry is prohibited. In the registry would include a selection for the reason for the prohibition (i.e., 30.06, 51%, gov't building, school, etc.). That should allow for growth to include other states.

Russell,
First off, welcome back! Second, supporting other states might be a daunting task, so I would start off with Texas only, but with the prospect of adding other states in some sort of fashion in the future (that's why they pay you DBA's big bucks, right! ). As well, perhaps a site like packing.org might have some information on the other states that might help you with your planning phase.

I like that idea, and think that would be very effective. It would also allow for changes to the concealed carry laws within the states (something that it seems every state likes to do, depending on who gets voted into office).propellerhead wrote:Maybe set it up as a 30.06/51% thing for Texas only but have future growth built in to make it a registry of places where concealed carry is prohibited. IMHO you should just make this yes/no with no description as to why it is not valid, do we really want this information posted out there for these businesses to see so they can correct their signage?Russell wrote:The questions for posting an entry to the site would be about the same:
Business Name
Business Catagory
Business Address
City
State
Location of sign
Is the sign valid?
Any further comments?
Can we give you credit for the submission?
Is there anything else I should ask, or that you guys would like to see on the website?

True statement. However, the target audience should include those who are considering getting a CHL. Even those who are just curious about it. The database would help them realize that there really are only a few places that won't let you carry.Russell wrote:I'll only have a radio button where you can select if it is either a 30.06 sign or a 51% sign. Persons with a CHL should already know that schools and gov't buildings are prohibited :)

Well, there's the ambiguous issue of government buildings with unapparent courthouse facilities located in them. We've had this discussion in other threads, and the fact that there is no requisite sign required for such facilities is really where the problem lies. An otherwise purely administrative building can be prohibited because there is a small court facility located within that is not generally apparent. This seems to be pretty common ocurrance in smaller towns and cities.Russell wrote: I'll only have a radio button where you can select if it is either a 30.06 sign or a 51% sign. I'm just guessing the 30.06/51% listings won't be as "always-changing" as you might expect, and adding the already prohibited places won't "explode" the database. The way I see this being used initially is to extract a listing of non-CHL-friendly places in a given zip code. I'd rather see a list of all places than the one or two (if any) 30.06/51% entries in my zip code. If that list becomes too large, I should be able to filter out the gov't buildings and schools.
Ask yourself. Do you know where all the gov't buildings are in your area? Do you know where all the schools are? What about buildings that are shared by gov't and private offices? Did you know that building X is considered a gov't building? Did you know that building Y is owned by the university and falls under "schools"? Yes, the City Hall is an obvious gov't building. But are all gov't buildings as obvious as City Hall? I'd like to know where those not-so-obvious ones are so I don't carry there by mistake. Isn't that the main goal of the database? Know-before-you-go kind of thing?
Either way, you're the one setting it up. It's your database. I'm just throwing out what I would like to see in it.

By the way, do you mind sharing the technicals of how you're going to set up the site?
It looks like you're hosting a Linux box with Apache/MySQL. Are you gonna go for a standard PHP/MySQL setup? Using any cool CMS tools like Drupal? I'm a sysadmin, so it always interests me how people go about accomplishing things like this.

Russell wrote:As far as the technical details, it will indeed be a standard php/mysql setup. The box I will be building it on is actually the production box for my webhosting company, eggycrew.com. PHP 5.2.1, MySQL 5.0.37, Apache 1.3.37. The OS is CentOS 4.4 with the DirectAdmin control panel for my customers as well as Installatron.
I will not be using any pre-built CMS's or anything like that, this is going to be built from the ground up and designed for only this website with speed and simplicity in mind
