Carter's Country range

CCis one of my favorite public ranges in the Houston area...

That said, they often don't have enough experienced RSO's on hand when the place is crowded. I've pulled my orange hat out a time or two and "taken over."

I really only use the range when it's essentially empty...

It *is* a nice facility though. Been there pretty much forever...some of my earliest gun-related memories are from the range at Carter's...

Stopped at the store earlier this week on my lunch hour. Range was jammed for a lunchtime, I was surprised.

I've only shot there during off-hours, like a long lunchtime, when there is zero crowds. I wouldn't want to be there on a busy weekend.

I'm down in Houston with the in-laws for Thanksgiving - the dad bought himself a few firearms, so I gave him some training at home before we went to Carter's Country range.

Fairly decent facility - bur their safety-standards are apallingly bad. They have a decent intercom system, but don't keep an eye on anyone handling firearms during a ceasefire at all. I had to ask 3 different people not to handle their pistols with folks downrange - and the ROs were nowhere in sight.

I reported my observations to a guy called Jim in the store itself, but I personally will not go back to that range.

Try Thunder Range on FM1314 in Conroe (about 10 miles west of Hwy 59 northeast of Houston).

Great range, strong enforcement of safety standards, excellent RSO's.

I've been very comfortable there every time I've visited.

There is another range on 1960 called Sportman's outlet http://sportsmans-outlet.com/. I have only been there once but it wasn't too crowded. I believe that they are a little cheaper than CC, and they aren't too far away. I didn't observe any unsafe behavior. It might be worth a try.

Sportsman's has a nice and clean facility, and very reasonably priced; the staff is friendly. It's $15 per person and there are no per gun charges like at Carter's. Additional shooters sharing a lane (up to two more) are $5 each. The downside is that there is no rifle section...

I used to go there on a weekly basis before I joined BASC.
