Houston Gun Ranges

I'm hoping you guys can give me some suggestions. I'm looking for a gun range in the Houston and North Houston areas. I'll be coming into town this weekend to throw a party for a friend and I'm planning to take him and a couple other guys to a range. I'll be in the Spring area and my friend is near Westpark Tollway and Beltway 8. So lots of ground to cover.

I'm hoping I can find a range that does pistols, rifles (300 Blackout), and shotguns (clays or skeet) and that wont break the bank in range fees. If this was going on in Dallas I would just go to Elm Fork. Is there a Houston equivalent? Bonus points if there is a steak house nearby.

Not exactly in North Houston, more West Houston but American Shooting Centers has everything you're looking for. Rifle & Pistol, Trap & Skeet as well as Sporting Clays. They rent guns on all the ranges and their fees aren't too bad. Can get a little pricey on the Pistol range if you have several guns you want to shoot.

American Shooting Center also isn't too far from some very good steakhouses. Pappa's Bros., Smith and Wolensky, Ruth's Chris, and Sullivan's are all a 10-20 min drive down westhiemer.

Carter's will be busy as hell... although this weekend is the general deer season opener, so maybe lots of folks at the lease not the range...

Nice facility, but can get pricey... they charge by number of shooters or number of guns, whichever is greater.

That is true, compared to other indoor ranges where you pay per shooter. But I just can't get over the fact that for me, it's $10.50 + tax all day compared to paying by the hour. [Handguns of course]. Sometimes I bring both my G19 and my G23, but hey, I'm always at the range for at least 2-3 hours.
I do want to try out Shiloh because they don't charge by the hour (as long as there's now wait). Now that's something I can't turn down!

The whole per gun thing drives me nuts. Seems like a lot of ranges in Houston do this. I've never come across one in Dallas like that.

I'll probably do ASC and I just be a little more picky about what I bring. Last time we did a big range visit up here we brought so many guns and ammo that we bottomed out the suspension in my friend's ford taurus

+1 for ASC! It's a very nice facility and the staff are all top notch. Even though they do charge $5 per gun after the 1st one on rifle & pistol, it's still not that bad of a deal. Weekends can get crowded though. So you may want to plan accordingly. They will also work to accomodate medium to large groups. So you may want to call ahead to see what you can arrange.

How does ACS handle the check in process, do they make you pull out all the guns for tagging like Carter's Country?

I've only been there a few times but they've never asked to see the guns. Just told them how many people/guns, paid and headed to the range.

They ask you how many guns (and would prefer that you don't handle any weapons, that you're not about to buy, in the pro shop), give you a copy of the rules to read over, take your money, give you your targets and a wrist band, and wish you a nice day. FYI, anyone on the firing line must have a wristband regardless if they're shooting or not. So if some of your buddies want to go to just hang out & watch, they'll have to do it from outside the range area.

Thanks for details. That's a much nicer setup than Carter's Country. They make you take out every gun so they can put a tag on it that proves you paid to bring it in. So you get pull out, lock back the slide, hand it to them, take it back, and put back each gun you bring.

I used to shoot at Carter's way back in the day... like early 90's. Back then I remember paying only $5 and shoot all I want. Not sure when they started the "per gun/per shooter" thing, but I went back in August of this year after maybe 10 years without setting foot there and was perplexed at how much they charge now. One of the many reasons I joined a shooting club!

+1 on joining a club. I just joined PSC in Pearland. I've only been to shoot there once, but the set up is pretty sweet. There are pistol bays where you can arrange multiple targets, draw from your holster, shoot on the move, etc. Plus the rifle, shotgun, archery, .22, & airsoft ranges. I should put the local florist on retainer, because the wife may start to get a bit miffed with the amount of time I'll be spending there.
