I got both ears pierced when I was seventeen.

One of my pupils noticed it a few months back and was like, 'Sir, you've got pierced ears!!!!"

Mucho hilarity.

It's easier to remove an earring than erase a tattoo.

Look we all have only one life to live. If a tat or a piercing makes you happy, go right ahead. If we're in church or if you are my neighbor that is cool, a situation where i can get to know you. However if a person with tats and piecings all over is acting funny at the gas station, I m going to keep a sharper eye on them. Just human nature, does not mean I dislike anyone, but I care for myself and my children. Tats and piecings can mean a person is in out and out rebellion against society (doesn't always of course). Firtst impressions are not everything, but they are important.

Since this thread got dug up somehow, I'll just add my 2 cents. I learned valuable life lessons during my time in Air Force Special Operations many years ago about being a "Quiet Professional". I have no piercings or tattoos. I dress fairly conservatively in a casual kind of way. I don't want people giving me more than one glance. The less attention my appearance causes, the less trouble I am likely to have.

i dont get it..
how does the way that someone looks effect your day to day life?
If a person perfers the company of someone of the same sex how does that effect your day to to day life?

why are people wasting time passing judgement on such things? nither seem to effect me. I have friends from all walks of life. stright, gay, sleved with tats and as many holes as you could find in a pin cushin.
just for the record im happly married for 16 years to my wife, have no tats and no more holes then god made me with.

While it doesn't bother me one way or the other, impressions do last sometimes, I have never understood anyone wanting to poke holes in their bodies or getting tattoos that may look good now (not so good in a few years). But since we are all individuals and have different beliefs that's just the way it is. I also have friends from all walks of life.

While it may not be right, we are all judged in one way or another.

I don't spend time passing judgement on such things so none of this effects my day. But it may effect their day or life. IMO, personal feelings and friendships are completely seperate from the work environment.

I have worked in industry for many years and a person's appearance is a big factor getting hired and getting promoted. Of course, it is different, or not as important, for certain industries or types of jobs, but hiring decisions are based on dress, personal appearance, hygiene, tatoos, piercings etc. Most of the bosses, employees and customers in my line of work are conservative so there is a certain standard that most people adhere to. I haven't read "The Quiet Professional" yet, but that is probably similar to what I am trying to explain.

It is a personal choice whether or not someone wants to go outside of the norm. Unfortunately, "hiring the best and most qualified person for the job" is mostly a fairytale. If I don't want to hire a manager or engineer who has multiple tats or piercings that is my choice. If the other person chooses to wear them that is their choice, but I won't lose sleep over it.

That's been true a long time but even more important with Obama-level unemployment across most of the country.

It doesn't, but if I see a person that looks like they are attempting to transform themselves into an animal or a demon , then don't be surprised if I keep a wide berth. For the record.....earrings just make me think of pirates, normal tats make me think of sailors and my grandpa.

I let a girl pierce my left ear with a GIGANTIC needle when I was about 18 or so. Why? Because I badly wanted to get to know her in the Biblical sense, and it seemed at the time like a good way to get there. I had a gold stud in it for about two weeks until my dad saw it for the first time. He gave me the choice between losing the piercing and continuing to live rent-free under his roof, or keeping my ear piercing and living under my own roof.

It was an easy decision.

I read (don't recall precisely where...) that guys with neck tattoos are very often criminals.

I wonder - is this so?

I know the few I've personally witnessed gave off a certain je ne sais quoi (for the Annoyed Man) of criminality. Were they? Was my instant judgement unfair? Maybe..., but I know most of the time my radar for such things has proven to be right on the money.

If being an egalitarian about other's appearance makes you feel righteousness, ...O.K., as for me, I'm going to judge a book by it's cover until and unless I learn better...

I work security right now. My personal experience is that 95% of those types of people are rude, ignorant, and possibly or do have criminal tendencies.

There are exceptions but... not many.

If you don't want people to judge you by your tattoos and piercings, don't get them. I'm mid 20s an NEVER would. I have more to worry about than being an individual.
