When I first saw the headline I thought the father had mistaken his son for a burglar. But, the fact is that the kid was actually trying to burglarize the neighbors house. Tragic nonetheless.

That father will never, ever, forgive himself for doing what was, at the time, the right thing to do. Sometimes, we can't protect kids from themselves. <sigh>

I feel extremely sorry for what the father must be going through. I don't even want to thank about how that mix of emotions must feel. As for the son, I am sorry but good riddens. He attempted to burglarize the woman next door, then apparently attacked his own father. I can't say that the thought of having one less person like that in this world bothers me.

He did what he thought was right, maybe that will bring some peace to him but I doubt it

I bet he wishes he had had the talk with his son, don't go burglarizing folks' houses or places, messing with stuff that doesn't belong to you, etc. By the time a kid is old enough to go out on his own, somebody needs to make sure that has been covered and understood. That is one of the things fathers are for.

Would the regret be any less if someone else had shot his kid? I hardly think so. It is not much solace, but at least he knows the circumstances, and doesn't have to wonder if his son was murdered and the reality was covered up somehow, as is often claimed.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

According to yahoo, the neighbor whose home was being broken into and called for help was the father's sister.

What a mess.

Wondering what a toxicology test will show in the autopsy?

This. The whole thing is so awful it is hard to try and understand in any other context, isn't it?

So Sad!
I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on.
I don't do those things to other people and I require the same of them.

I dont think we should be assuming that this father didnt "have the talk", or that he was somehow irresponsible as a father. I bet he has talked to his son many times. My heart aches trying to imagine the suffering of this poor man.

Will the toxicologist's report reveal adolescent stupidity? I feel for the father/mother; otoh, I kinda' side with SRH78 above.

Such a horrific tragedy, no parent should ever have to bury their child... Given what the son did was nothing short of pure stupidity, it's just a shame that he had to pay for that stupidity with his life. My prayers go out to his poor family, i hope the father finds the strength to eventually forgive himself.
