Veterans What was your best assignment/duty?

Doing the "Duval crawl" in Key West, Florida, and trying not to smile in Olongapo City.

In reference to the Belgian beer Duval, right? I like that beer. I've been to Belgium a few times and have some of the Duval glasses.

Looks like I wasn't the only person taking souvenir glasses from Belgium bars.

I lifted mine in more than one way. I also ended up with a bar stool.

Marine Barracks Guam for 15 months in 81-82 and then 6 months in Okinawa in 84 where I got 5 days R&R in the Philippines while the rest of my Company was training there. It was cool seeing my buddies in town and they had "Cinderella Libo" and ingot to stay in town and play!!!!

Wiesbaden, Germany June '75 thru June 78.

I received draft lottery number 44 in the August 71 drawing. Joined the USAF instead of going Army. I was in an Electronics Installation Squadron in Germany, got to visit most of the US bases there. Lots of traveling, good times.

This is going to sound corny, but I really can't rank one place higher than another. McGuire AFB, New Jersey...I met my Texan wife there (she was in the AF, too) , and learned how to fix airplanes. RAF Alconbury, England...got to live in a small English village and work in a small repair shop with some good guys...RAF Mildenhall, England, got to travel to Italy many times and see a small sliver of war-torn Bosnia, as well as have working vacations in Greece and Spain...Beale AFB, CA, got to work the famous U-2S Dragonlady and learn some "cool" stuff...NAS Keflavik, got to see a part of the world not that many folks get to see (mountains, glaciers, and waterfalls galore) and be home with my family (no deployments) for two years...and Travis AFB, CA, well, it's hard to say anything specific, but just this: I got to be in charge of several large multimillion dollar aircraft in game-changing situations and be directly in charge of over 50 people doing it, and wasn't even 40 years old...now, all these assignments had their downsides too...but I guess for me, every place I served gave me memories and friends that I will hold onto until the day I pass.

While I understand the position.. the question asked was BEST.

Not did we like them all for one or more reasons.. Perhaps I took the OP's question too literally, but I assume the question was, of all your assignments choose one, the best one.
That question does not take away from, your great memories of other great assignment.

I have great memories from each of my assignments, meeting my wife 21 years ago at 7th ID Fort Ord, 8th ID in Germany, seeing things like east Germany and the wall, that no longer exist, 82nd at Bragg, and, ok, so that one just sucked.. , Fort Jackson, Oregon State University, Fort Wainwright, Fort Richardson, Fort Hood… all have great memories..
BUT we were asked, challenged…. Choose the best one…
For me, it would have to be Fort Ord.. Best unit I’ve been in, best location, met my wife, boys born there.

7th INF DIV, Fort Ord CA.. 1988-1993..... Not only the best duty station, best unit, best location ... but I met and married my wife there.....in down town Monterrey California.

Second best would be Alaska, 1-17 IN, then 501st PIR. 1993-2002

I am not a service member but Fort Ord is where my wife went to high school. Montery is a lovely place. We went there on vacation and man that is nice. I remember one afternoon about 3 pm. Sitting outside of little hole in the wall burger place. Great burger and cold beer. There was a big fire pit going. The breeze was coming in off the ocean and it was about 69. I called back to Houston to check with my support staff lead and he was complaining that it was 98 and 90% humidity.

I wish I could afford to live there I would have moved in a heartbeat!

In the mid seventies, when I was stationed with the 7th ID at Ft. Ord, we had a formal function on post and decided afterwards to go down to Carmel to the Hogs Breath Saloon. We were seated at our redwood tables in the courtyard area, all pretty in our dress blues, when our commander noticed through the enclosed bar window, that the owner (Clint Eastwood) was sitting at the bar. He decided we should go say hello to Clint. A bunch of us got up and headed into the bar area, and when we were a few feet from Clint, he turned his head slowly toward us. We all came to screeching halt as he said, in his low gravely best Dirty Harry/Josy Wales voice, "you boys having some kind of a.... function?" Our CO then replied in a most sheepish voice, "yes sir." He advised us to be good, have a good time, and not to get rowdy. We all relied in a sheepish voice, "yes sir" once again, and we all meekly turned around and quietly returned to our tables. I'll never forget that incident "The Cavalry Meets Dirty Harry and Retreats"

There's a particular house on the beach along 17 Mile Drive that I have always fantasized about. My plan is to win the lottery and take a suitcase of money to the door step, open it up facing the door, and when the door is answered, simply point down to the money and say, "take it and leave."

Alright, if I'm going to be pinned down on it and all...I'd say my time at RAF Mildenhall, working MC-130s and doing rotations to the Italian boot during the Bosnian business...that was a TIGHT bunch that I worked with and learned from...I went to a couple of places that most Americans will never go to and was in the "prime of my life" doing it...I had a sense of camaraderie when I worked Special Ops that I never had before or since...and for me, nothing will top the times riding low-level in a C-130 through the mountain valleys of Italy, even though it scared me silly when we did it.
