Everyone wants to think they would react to the situation, however numerous studies on this type of event shows that only 10% of the population actually possess the fight instead of flight ability. Most people simply do not react, but flee from the danger. Not to say that is wrong. Faced with this scenario, that was very much the proper response. An armed citizen who does not have tactical experience would have exasperated the issue. This coward planned this out extremely well. However lack of training was his downfall as well, he did not know how to clear the jam in combat. He froze when the gun jammed, and thank God he did.
When I was in SWAT we practiced clearing jams as well as overcoming other tactical issues so much that you dreamed about it. When you look at the way this guy prepared for his mission, a well trained, well disciplined officer would have been the only way to stop this during the active shooting event.
But for those that like to practice shooting, this brings up the thought now for those of you that have not practiced double taps to chest and head, you might want to start.

I hear you, but when was the last time officers engaged a active mass shooter? Seriously, unless it was a swat officer sitting in the crowd, he would still be massively outgunned, out armed and caught just as surprised. We know all too well in these situations the beat officers are there to secure the perimeter, get the body bags and evidence bags ready and wait for the swat to suit up and get there while the shots ring out in the building, just like Columbine which was beyond excruciating, just like VT. You are dodging bullets on your own in a mass shooting. The Swat saviors arent going to be any use to you or your loved ones if you are caught in a mass shooting situation. Heck the Police station in this situation was a block away!

I would love to practice rapid fire...I would love to practice double-taps...I would love to practice drawing and firing...but I have nowhere to practice any of that, other that dry fire, which isn't the same. :grumble

Rent a range for a "private party" for the day, and have at it? I'm in.

I have been thinking about my personal tactical response to this situation for two days. I appreciate the reasoned discourse on that topic on this forum.

We have a problem folks. Even fox is pounding the anti gun theme. It is just a matter of allowing the dead to be buried and then there will be politicians screaming from the rooftops that the old assualt weapons ban should be reinstated. The emotions and irrational fears will rule the day.

We had all better be ready to support our rights or these elitists will have us back to black powder only weapons before you can say Obama hates America.

The Movie Theater Company has policy of not allowing CHL gun holders to lawfully carry
on site. ALL the victims should sue theater for not defending them after
removing their ability to defend themselves.

Fox is by no means gun friendly. I offer Sheppard Smith as an example. Just about the only guy who speaks out in favor of gun rights at all on that channel is Huckabee. Yes, they lean right, but it is a very country club right.

I have thought about it and the only response would have been to charge that mad man. There had to be people within feet of him and if everyone had of charged him rather than running in fear, he would have got fewer rounds off. The gas mask he was wearing would severely restrict his view, combined with the darkness in the theater would put him at a disadvantage if charged.

In reality, very few people would have what it takes to go on the offense to this situation. While I am not going to sit here and pretend I could have gotten to him, but I can assure you, I would have tried. Not out of some kind of bravery but more out of the fear. I know for a fact I cannot outrun being shot at so I might as well run toward him and give that a try. Unless I was one of the first to be blasted, I would have tried to get up on him rather than shoot it out from a distance.

You are correct. About an hour ago I heard huckabee make a very firm statement that gun control is NOT the answer. The rest are not our friends.

Yall are correct. This is scary. It will get horrible in the next few.

@rupertmurdoch
We have to do something about gun controls. Police license okay for hunting rifle or pistol for anyone without crim or pscho record. No more

It is real easy for the elitist types to talk of gun control when they have armed guards and hide behind fortress style living quarters every night. Not to mention that the next move for the libtards is to disarm the citizens. The elitist have everything and they are very afraid that the rest of us can and will eventually take it away from them. Making us dependent on them while taking away our means of resisting their total control is the ultimate plan. This kind of tragedy is just what they need to advance their agenda.

Used straw buyers to buy the guns. Eric Harris was taking medication for anger depression and suicidal thoughts. Gun free zone.

The Virginia Tech massacre: April 16, 2007 Seung-Hui Cho was the killer. 33 students and teachers were murdered. 23 injured. Under 25 years of age. Bought guns locally shortly before shooting. Treated for anxiety disorder in high school, ruled mentally ill prior to the shooting. Gun free zone.

Tucson Massacre: January 8, 2011 Jared Lee Loughner was the killer. 6 people were murdered. 13 injured. 22 years of age. Bought the guns shortly before the shooting. Found by a judge to be incompetent to stand trial based on two medical evaluations, diagnosed with schizophrenia. Not a gun free zone. CHL assisted in stopping the shooting.

Aurora Movie Massacre: July 20, 2012. James Eagan Holmes was the killer. 12 people were murdered. 58 injured. Under 25 years of age. Bought the guns locally shortly before the shooting. Described as a loner with no friends, parents knew it was their son. Gun free zone.

Did I miss any mass shootings in the US? There was one in was it Utah at a mall? In all cases there was a political call to ban guns. Notice any similarities.
You think we should ban people under 25 years old? :headscratch
Schizophrenia develops in men between the ages of 15 and 24. I suspect all of these men suffer from schizophrenia.

Parents may want to help their children but since they are 18 they cannot force their children into treatment. Since they are developing the mental disease, they probably do not fit the requirements for forced commitment. Thus they are able to legally buy guns of any kind. Which in these cases they did just before they acted out their aggression.

It is barely 18 months between the Gabby Giffords Tucson shooting and the Aurora shooting. The general public while they believe in the 2nd Amendment, they are not going to continue to support, complete freedom for this sort of thing.

I sense the gun community needs to at least frame a solution, rather than reacting to what the anti gun proponents come up with. This is what we can continue to expect from the anti side http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/bloo ... -1.1119049" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here is my suggestion:

16 license to drive
18 license to vote, marry, become a soldier, CHL if in military.
21 license to drink, CHL

What if the right to, buy, own and possess a gun was restricted to those men who are at least 25, unless they received a yearly clean bill of mental health from a licensed psychiatrist. And it would be illegal to sell a gun to a male unless they were 25 or possessed a clean bill of mental health card from a licensed psychiatrist.

Women would not be affected in my proposal.

Yeah, I know there would be all kinds of ways a crazy 24 year old man could still get a gun, but it would be harder.

Yeah, and I know I don't have any votes right now from forum members who are under 25.

Schizophrenia is a terrible disease, it robs talented young men of their normal lives. Young men who are developing it, should not have access to firearms.

Period. Second Amendment or not. They cannot have firearms. We need as a group to require and demand the government restrict access to firearms to this group of people.

I like it, but, NO PROFESSIONAL ANYWHERE would do this.

Seems kinda sexist.
I am not a lawyer, nor have I played one on TV, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, nor should anything I say be taken as legal advice. If it is important that any information be accurate, do not use me as the only source.

I don't like it. Would be nothing but another restriction on us. Plus, most of the psychiatrists I know probably couldn't pass their OWN tests.
