NRA Personal Protection in the Home - Registrations

Here are the people I have registered for the PPIH Class on Sat. April 7, 2007. If you cannot attend, please let me know ASAP.

If you want in and aren't listed, let me know. This class is not full, these as just all of the names I have at this point. The deadline for registering is this Friday, March 23rd. We have to order class materials, so we have to get this class booked.

Yes, I do, but I wanted to participate in the student course also. Obviously, not this time.

BTW, what are you putting down as your choices for CHL Instructor renewal dates? Marty and I are looking at September.

I still haven't received my class list. My renewal application has been in for a while, but I'll still getting the infamous "Packet mailed to applicant" message on the DPS website.

I know a bunch of us are trying to get the same date, but please don't wait on me. I'll just try to get whatever date you folks choose.

ARGHHH, I can't make it that weekend either......I am on-call at work. I will try to attend the next course. I would really love to bring Kimberly to this course.

Charles and Marc teaches some really good stuff in the class. It's definitely a must attend class.

I can wait til they off a Outside the home class.

Jason: You could certainly ask for a waiver of the pre-req for the Outside the Home class in May. Why not see if Kimberely wants to attend this April, one-day class with us, and then the two of you could take the Outside the Home class together, if you have time. If transportation is a possible issue on April 7, I certainly don't mind volunteering myself for driver duty.

Since Charles needs a response by the 23rd, we can't wait to discuss it at IDPA on the 24th. But if Kimberly would like to take the class, we can make it happen.

Charles, how many rounds should we bring for the PPIH class?

It was a great class. The basic premise was fairly simple, but Marc and Charles made it interesting and gave excellent explanations of unclear areas.

ETA: I'm looking forward to the PPOH class.

with Venus. With inexperienced instructors who just read back to you what's in the book, I could see that this might be a pretty boring, overly-simplistic class. With Charles and Marc, you certainly don't face that problem.

Heck, we even got firsthand insight into the current Texas legislative session and how changes in the law will affect us as of September 1...can't get much more timely than that.

The weather didn't exactly cooperate, but I'm starting to think it's just me. I shot the November IDPA at PSC, and from then on every time I've had it on my calendar to make the drive down, it's rained. From now on I'll be prepared with a variety of weather gear whenever I get on 290 and start the trip to Pearland.

PSC is a great venue for this sort of class, as well. Air conditioned (or, yesterday, heated) classrooms, coffee, restrooms, and the shooting range all right there together (and Kolaches for breakfast). Charles commented near the end of the class that even though the NRA says eight hours is adequate for the course, he was considering setting it at 10 hours to make sure that they didn't have to cut short any important course modules or range time. I agree. Again, with inexperienced instructors I'd probably be clamoring to get out after my eight hours, but we stretched it out to 10 yesterday anyway because everyone in the class agreed they wanted to continue.

I did have one other post-class comment I didn't think about until I was driving home, and part of this may have to do with the unusual 40s-and-raining-in-April conditions yesterday, so Charles and Marc can take this with a grain of salt. At the lunch break, we were given information about area eateries, and left on our own. If there had been a way for us to all chip in and have food and drink delivered (pizza would have been fine), it would have been nice, I think, to stay and have lunch in the classroom, get to know our classmates better, and have some off-the-record, informal Q&A with the instructors about the course. I think it would be easier to control the timing of the day if everyone didn't have to drive away from PSC to eat, and I think there would be a lot to gain in an additional hour of conversation. The course is inexpensive; adding a charge for lunch would be easy for students to absorb.

I'm looking forward to the PPOH class. Charles, do you need us to do anything additional to confirm our spots in that course? (Other than show up on time.

I'll allow 90 minutes drive time next round; promise.)

I agree it was a great class. I had a good time and learned a lot. Even got picked on a little by Charles (but I deserved it).

I appreciate your comments on this. Lunch is always a puzzle. In some ways it's good to let everyone get out of there for a bit. In addition, instructors usually need a break. It's a lot easier in that regard having more than one instructor, but still ... For the class this past Saturday, as it turns out, Charles and I had to spend most of the time setting up the bay for the practical part, so ...
But having lunch there, one way or another, can also be good. At the very least it saves travel time.
There have been times we have either told everyone to 'brown bag it' or had something delivered (usually pizza), and from comments posted it looks highly likely we will do something like that for the PPOH class.
