All new applicants need to do is send in their application materials- CHL-100, CHL-6, online receipt page and write a letter stating they would like DPS to use their Texas DL/ID photos. Now, this is not possible for applicants who have an out of state DL/ID. I'm almost certain they recently began doing this for new applicants. this way, you could potentially email all your documents and avoid snail mail.

Here's the answer from Deadra Nealy at DPS on the subject.

From: CHLinstructors
Date: 6/18/2012 8:12:08 AM
To: Morris
Subject: RE: Pass port photos

This is in the works, but has yet to be passed. Continue to have students send in passport photos and photo holders until further notice for the department.

Subject: Pass port photos

I saw on the "Texas CHL Forum" this weekend that the passport photos will no longer be needed because the person's drivers license photo can now be used. How is this accomplished?

Well, your response from DPS WAS nine days ago. It's probably changed by now...

So my wife just did her class last week, on line application and fingerprints this week,, AND PHOTOS..

Why? Because on the DPS web site provided CHL-6 http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/InternetFo ... /CHL-6.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; there is NO PLACE to select using the DL photo,, no option, no verbiage suggesting such a thing is possible..

What are we missing that the posters above are seeing? What box on the DPS provided CHL-6 form http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/InternetFo ... /CHL-6.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; are you suggesting is the "If they want to use the DL photo just mark 'Use exiting Drivers License (State ID Card) photo' on the CHL-6"

Not suggesting, that is what you do. Just write it on the CHL-6.

Ahh, ok so the above poster that said " just mark 'Use exiting Drivers License (State ID Card) photo' on the CHL-6" meant write it.. Mark to me meant a check box or something that was titled "Use exiting Drivers License" and needed to be marked.

Thank you, guess we will know for next time. :thumbs2:

My son-in-law and I are going to Great Southwest Gun tomorrow for our CHL classes, my 1st renewal, his initial CHL. I did my application with the state a few days ago and was looking at it this evening to see what all has to be sent in with the barcoded page.

The first box on the checklist says to send the barcoded page.

The second box says says send in the CHL-100.

The third box says "TxDPS will attempt to use the passport photo and resubmit the fingerprints on file for your renewal application. If either of these items does not meet current quality standards, TxDPS will notify the applicant and a new submission will be required."

This says to me that all I need to send to TxDPS is the barcoded page and my CHL-100. Agreed??

If so, the TxDPS is really simplifying the process. Plus, I just have to go 5 hours tomorrow, while the SIL has to go 8-6. That makes a long day!

MikeinTexas, since May of 2011 the procedure has been changed that Renewal License will no longer require NEW photos and fingerprints, unless the ones that the department currently have on file are not of sufficient quality as to be digitized. So, you will not have to provide new photos or fingerprints for renewal. However, this thread that has been in discussion by CHL insturcors, is for New license applications and using TX driver license photos if the applicant desires to do that and not provide new passport hotos for their new CHL license. As for hours to go for training, the renewal training is to be 4 hours and for new licenses the time is "not less than 10 or more than 15 hours". I'm not acquainted with your abbreviation "SIL".

Thanks for the replies. I guess I was confused on the CHL or instructor part. The process is getting easier though.

Can you send a passport photo if you don't like your DL photo? :ack:

Absolutely! That's currently the preferred way as far as the DPS is concerned. Even if you're just renewing, you can change the photo.
