Is there an NRA website that posts where the Basic Instructor Training (BIT) courses are being held? (I can only seem to find the follow up courses on the NRA website)
Follow up question: is there an additional class that one would take to be certified to teach a CHL certification class?

I believe that Marc Gentine at PSC teaches the NRA BIT course.radioflyer wrote:Is there an NRA website that posts where the Basic Instructor Training (BIT) courses are being held? (I can only seem to find the follow up courses on the NRA website)

Follow up question: One of the instructors on the forum can tell you about the DPS course required to become a CHL instructor.

I'm an NRA certified instructor, but not a Training Counselor. However, it's my understanding that BIT is not considered to be a separate course for which you receive a certificate of completion (as opposed to a certification in a specific shooting discipline.) You should take BIT in conjunction with an NRA Basic Instructor Course for specific shooting discipline.
The NRA courses don't have anything to do with being certified to teach the Texas CHL course. For that, you must take the DPS instructor course. If you are an NRA Instructor with teaching experience, then you can take a shorter course (28 v. 36 hrs), but BIT along won't do it. Even being NRA certified by itself isn't enough. You must have actual teaching experience. (At least at one time actual teaching experience was required. This may have changed.)

Does BIT alone get you anything? Are you an NRA certified instructor but not certified in any discipline?

The problem as I see it is that finding a class that includes the BIT is not a simple task. Seems there are only a couple of instructors that do it in this area, and they don't do it often. In the DFW area I'm aware of Jan Heath at Grand Prairie Gun club, and I believe there is a instructor that does it at Red River Firearms. Last time I talked to Jan, he couldn't tell me when he would next have the class. Also, it can be pricy.

BIT is a prerequisite to taking an NRA Instructor Course in any discipline. BIT is only good for a year, as a general rule, but a Training Counselor can give you more information. The BIT class teaches how to teach, it's not a firearms course.hillfighter wrote:Does BIT alone get you anything? Are you an NRA certified instructor but not certified in any discipline?

Matthew Courtney, a training counselor from Lake Charles, La will be teaching a Basic handgun instructor course at Golden Triangle Gun Club, in Beaumont, July 10,11. The cost of the course is $300 with a $50 deposit. You may contact me to reserve a spot. mjones40@gt.rr.com. If you are a certified NRA instructor you are eligible for the 28 hour CHL instructor class.
