#SMUSWAT - It is still unclear what type of weapon the suspect has in the crane. The perp reportedly has an extensive criminal history.

Dallas Police on Scene of Person in Crane at SMU

A person is holed up in a construction crane on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

SMU spokesman Kent Best says a person believed to have been a fugitive from Dallas police took refuge Monday in the cab of a crane being used on a construction site for student housing. It is not clear if the person is armed.

Television footage showed the crane on an empty lot, with the cab higher than the light poles at SMU's nearby football stadium.

Dallas police spokeswoman Melinda Gutierrez says SMU police requested assistance, but she had no other details.

Best says there are a limited number of people on campus because of the Memorial Day holiday, but officials were planning to warn people to avoid the area.

WFAA TV ‏@wfaachannel8 1 minute ago

UPDATE: Man refuses to leave crane, tells police “I am waiting for my appointed time.”
https://twitter.com/#!/wfaachannel8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Well that makes sense now. If the space ship which is to transport the fellow is supposed to land near the crane at a certain time .... you wouldn't want to miss your appointment ... :shock:
WFAA TV ‏@wfaachannel8 27 minutes ago

UPDATE: Man in crane says he has been "unable to rest or sleep" prior to standoff "because police have been following me."

http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2012/05/28/robb ... xw.twitter" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Roads closed etc
Still no alert from SMU that I know of, since it's "closeed" for holiday (though I used to go in to work sometimes at U of H and San Jac on holidays

oh ,,, @SMU gave a little alert/mention to the 6,000 who follow that twitter account, but the SMU Campus police alerts site ... nothing

The mental health of the guy in the crane doesn't sound good. I hope it all works out with no shots fired.

As long as he doesn't start shooting they'll just wait him out.

It went from a stand off to a drop off.
