Authorities say a 59-year-old Jefferson County resident was awakened at 2 a.m. Tuesday to find a burglar with a handgun in his home. The homeowner pulled out his own gun and fired two shots. The burglar ran away.

Authorities say Richard Bates showed up later at a hospital

Police say the homeowner, Keena Lawson, acted to protect his girlfriend and children when he shot Owens, who allegedly had a sawed-off shotgun.

"It was not no robbery. It was nothing like that," said Reid. "The guy's story was not consistent. It was all over the place."

Police said Lawson's gun is legally owned and he is not charged with any crimes.
