Not what you think. I carry my Kahr PM40 in my front pocket almost excusively. I don't use a pocket holster. I used to carry in a Hoffner IWB but after losing about 40 pounds I started carrying in my front pocket because it just worked. I was recently showing my wife the pistol to compare it to an M&P 9C. After I dropped the mag I cycled it several times to clear the chamber and there was literally a cloud of pocket lint and dust flying about. I didn't notice if it locked in battery or not but judging by the amount of lint that came out it could have affected it in a firing situation. I took a can of dust off to it and even more came out. New protocol now to de-lint every so often.

Ummm, that's what pocket holsters are for - to keep the pocket nasties out of your gun. And to keep your gun from getting scratched up by your keys, change, etc.

Get one. Your gun will be so much happier.

Oh, and congrats on the weight loss! Quite an accomplishment!

One of my holsters has an unfinished inner side. When I use that holster, I get fuzz build up on the inside of the tip of the barrel.

Not-so-funny-story
When I took my first CHL class the instructor had everyone take out their weapons before the shoot and do a safety check (this was in NC and at the time everyone shot simultaneously ). One guy in particular was having trouble taking down the slide on his pocket semi-auto. Looked to me like an antique .32 or something similar. The instructor finally figured it out and when the slide came off a huge chuck of pocket lint came along with it. The barrel and underside of the slide were jammed with years of lint. I'm certain the thing would have caught fire if fired.

There are many tales of woe and discomfort on the web. For $20-30, get a pocket holster. Cheap safety and comfort.
I cannot imagine carrying a loaded gun in my pocket without a properly secured trigger. When you drop your keys in there and go to fish them out, how easily will they get hooked on the trigger?

My pocket holster is open on the barrel side, so I don't know how much lint it would actually keep out but checking and cleaning regularly is certainly good advice

I was thinking the rule of thumb was not to have anything in the pocket with the weapon? I carry mine by itself with the key, change, etc... in an other pocket.

...we should get intimate with any weapon we trust our lives to on a very regular basis...I once got into the squad for the night's work and tried to clear the 870---it wouldn't rack...at least not till I took the chickie leg bone out of the chamber...last time I relied on the city 870...

I've seen the 1911 forum thread. thanks for bringing it back. I don't carry anything else in that pocket so I don't reach into it unless i need to.

I have tried pocket holsters at Gun Shows. I won't go into a lot of detail but, I have major issues with my hands and it's just too difficult.

I check my pistol and take it apart at least once a month. I carry IWB and I still get lint and dog hair inside of it. One time I found a dog hair inside of my spare mag that I carry. But then again I carry all the time including in the house. Personally I wouldn't pocket carry. I use my front pockets on my pants and I don't have anything small enough to pocket carry if I wanted to. Back to the point, give it a once over (take it apart) at least once a month.

Another obvious benefit to a well-made pocket holster is the protection of trigger. Besides keeping fuzz away from all but the end of barrel and keeping the trigger protected, it also commonly reduces &/or eliminates the printing/outline of gun in pocket.

Are you pocket carrying with +1 in chamber without a holster?!

Yellow Lab hair tends to get everywhere. I don't know how but it does. But you gotta love the pup, he cuddles up beside you and growls and barks at every noise in the driveway and yard. I still can't figure out how a Lab hair ended up inside of a fully loaded Glock mag though. That's no easy task.

If you are addressing me with the question of pocket carry w/chambered round the answer is yes.

I have always been afraid to pocket carry with no holster. If there is a reason it just won't work for you I suppose you have no other option. I carry my PM9 in an IWB holster and still find lint accumulating on it. Maybe it is from the leather in the holster? Maybe my shirt??? I dunno for sure, but it does happen. I try to remember to remove the slide and wipe it down about once a week with one those "Remcloths" they have some kind of oil or something on them. It might even be dust accumulation... I don't think it would cause my weapon to jam... it never seems that thick.
