Eye Doctor Wo Understands What a Shooter Needs???????????

I am really frustrated. I have been to two different eye doctors who are supposed to know what they are doing, and I simply cannot get them to understand what it is I need. When I tell them to pretend that I am stone blind in my left eye and my life depends on being able to focus perfectly on a size 6 font at exactly 28", they lose their minds and way, way, way overthink the problem - even to the point of telling me, even though I am right eye dominant, to use my left eye for near focus and my right eye for distance - completely backwards from th epoint I am trying to get across. I asked for sample contacts running a certain range (about 6) for my right eye and I would experiment to find what works - you would have thought I asked to sleep with their daughters. I just don't get it. If I can find the one that gives me front sight focus I need, then, and only then can I work on one that will give me the distance vision I need.

Does anyone know of an eye doctor within 100 miles of Katy, Texas that knows how to see things from a shooters viewpoint. Or does anyone know of an on-line store that will sell me sampe contacts in teh range I want so that I can find what I need.

When I got my rx safety glasses, i didnt want to fork out $ for my bifocal rx. So I talked to my eye doc and hauled my guns in and found an rx that has my front site in focus, as that is most important. Target is ok, but front sites are crisp! Works great! JMPHO.

My OD understood what I was asking for when I mentioned a "front sight focus." His only question was "one eye, or both open?".....

Fortunately, my arms are still long enough to make that happen...the newspaper, not so much anymore LOL

I had shooting glasses made with my dominant eye focused on front sight, and non-dominant set for distance. Works like a champ.

You could try what FINALLY worked for me after years of not being understood

You know how when you hold a book, you tilt it so the top of the book is farther from you than the bottom?

I took a church song book to the eye doctor held it at arms length and said "I need to focus on the top line at this distance, and be able to see the bottom line too, that's the mainliest thing of importance, I also drive a car, but other people seem to get out of my way in time ... so far.."

Instead of just choosing A or B lens on their machine ... I insisted on also looking at my song book (a book with which I'm familiar) before choosing.

I got 2 pair of glasses that work like I've been trying to get them to work for over 20 years.

My eye doctor is D.C Bright in Texas City and he understands, approves and helps shooters. I have gone to him now for 25 years. Just did another change on my contacts because the astigmatism was just not working on my shooting eye plus tennis. He understands trying to fight against the close and far focus issues. I have also had him make me lens to use with my standard sunglasses and shooting glasses specifically to see my sights and still not be to out of focus for the target. he has Wiley shooting glasses for presciptions for that. I wear Bolle Vigilante sunglasses that accept the snap in lens carrier that I can move from frame to frame for all my glasses to use the one lens in multiple frames. That allows me to have different color lens for all occasions by changing the colored lens and move the snap in carrier for the presciption. I just bought the snap in carrier online with my Bolle glasses, gave it to him, he made a prescription lens for it. I have several frames setup with extra different color lens and two snap in correction carrier lens. Saves money that way. Works great too.

(Unfortunately) my eye doctor in IL advertised in the ISRA paper. the guy was fantastic. Had me bring in a long gun and a handgun so that we could set everything right.

My eye doctor down here in TX was very nice about setting my vision the way I wanted it, even to the extent of walking me out to the lobby with the test frame on so that I could check distance clarity, and allowing me to use a (substitute) front sight to set the mid range. unfortunately my vision care coverage changed and she is not on my plan anymore. It took me several tries to find her and I am much less satisfied with the selection from this new plan and have made my objections known.

Did you tell them it was for shooting or did you tiptoe around the question and contribute to the confusion?

well... I just happen to know an excellent eye doc (if I do say so myself lol) that is a CHL holder, a hunter AND a member of this forum.... I'm a bit further than 100 miles from Katy though lol

No. I was very direct and specific with him. On my follow up vist I told him to pretend that I was stone cold blind in my left eye and that my life depended on me having a razor sharp focus on a #8 font at exactly 28-inches. Still didn't get through to him I fear.

For What Its Worth - I told the opthamologist that I wanted the point of focus to correspond to the front site of my weapon.

With a fully extended stance, I carefully measured the distance from my grip to my front sight, thus giving doctor a measured distance.

Perscription was designed that way; filled at COSTCO as a bifocal for near (front site) and far (target) vision.

This works great. Now I position my computer monitor and reading material at the same distance, so "All is good.

My day to day glasses are progressives. I found them very difficult to use when shooting. I took my challenge to a shooter / optometrist, explained what I needed and brought a slide with me to demonstrate. It took several tries to perfect but I ended up with a shooting specific set of lenses. My left eye is a single focus lens. The right eye is dominant. That lens is a bifocal the upper part of which is optimized for the front with with a focus from 24 inches to infinity. The lower cut is made lower that usual and is set for close work and reading. The arrangement will differ from person to person but can be made to work.
