Seguin's Mopes & Dopes
Just to let SeamusTX/Jim know that Galveston doesn't have ALL the fun, a couple local items that caught my eye:
On either May 22 or 23, (story times and video time stamps conflict), a guy with a mask and a gun walked into a convenience store and tried to rob the place. I dunno much about modern cash registers, but for whatever reason, the clerk apparently was not able to give him the money out of the black box underneath. The robber, holding the gun in his right hand, tried to open the box, failed, threw it on the floor to break it open, failed, and then left with it under his arm. It was later recovered, unopened, down the street aways. Fail again. The Seguin Police put the securty video on their Facebook page (the SPD has a Facebook page? who knew?). It is pretty clear, actually. AFAIK, the robber has not been caught.
Video: " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Question: Assuming you were the clerk, and assuming you were armed regardless of store polices, and assuming this guy got the drop on you when he came in, how many of you would have shot him while he was throwing the box on the floor?
Bonus question: What is the gun the robber is holding?
Second item -- much sadder.
This article: http://seguingazette.com/news/article_1 ... 002e0.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
is about a family who lost many of their possessions and all of the husband's tools when a travel trailer used for storage burned down. It put the husband out of work -- apparently he is a contractor. I along with my volunteer fire department responded to that fire, but unfortunately there was not much we could do - the trailer was fully engulfed when we arrived. Despite that, the husband came around and thanked each one of us individually, which was a very nice gesture.
This occurred in a trailer park, and is the seventh fire in that park since November last year. Five times it was an empty mobile home, once an unused vehicle, and now the guy's storage trailer. In one case we got to the mobile home in time to keep fire damage to one corner underneath, but some weeks later it burned to the ground. All the fires have started in the wee hours, roughly around 3 to 5 a.m. on or near the weekend. I have responded to most (maybe all? can't remember) of them.
This is a mope we would like to see caught soon.

Re: Seguin's Mopes & Dopes
Oh, we've talked about that, but the fire department, at least ours, is not in habit of installing surveillance equipment on private property. You would think some of the owneres might, but I suppose that many of the unoccupied mobile homes might not have owners that either care or can be found? I dunno. The paper notes that in addition to the county sheriff's office and the county and city fire marshall, the BATFE and I think some state agency have their finger in the pie as well. So maybe someone will see something some early morn.seamusTX wrote:Motion-activated game cameras are cheap compared to potential damage and loss of life.ELB wrote:This is a mope we would like to see caught soon.

I just realized I made an error in the OP. One of the unoccupied structures was actually a stick-built house, not mobile home. Doesn't change the story much, but I hate making errors like that.

ELB:
Although the robber didn't fire any rounds while he was in the store, who knows that he would not have done so
when he re-approached the counter in a seemingly angry mood?
Due to the strong possibility that he was a crack baby or a tweaker, I would have shot him while he was distracted.
As far as the gun he was carrying, I'm no CIA analyst with pixel-enhancing software, so I will just throw out that it
was either a Bersa Thunder or a Taurus PT-709 Slim.

"Due to the strong possibility that he would accidently shoot me while throwing that box around like an idiot..."
Being shot accidently is as unhealthy as being shot on purpose.

Re: Seguin's Mopes & Dopes
As reported, this sounds...not quite right:
http://seguingazette.com/news/article_7 ... 002e0.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Boyfriend and girlfriend, both 19, argued. BF tried to leave in his car. GF tried to stop him by jumping on the back of the car. When BF turned out of driveway onto street, GF fell off and won herself a helicopter ride to San Antonio. Reported to be in stable condition.
Now here comes the part that doesn't seem quite right, given the reported facts: BF arrested for misdemeanor assault with the car. ???
Amusing irony: GF's last name is "Bump."

Maybe people should settle their personal issues in private, and make sure no one goes to the hospital.
Even if someone that you know and love or once loved or got your freak on with or whatever jumps on the back of your car, probably driving fast enough to dump her on the road is not the best solution.
To quote a character in the movie National Treasure, someone has to go to jail. The obvious suspect went to jail. I hope he's happy now, but I doubt it.

Re: Seguin's Mopes & Dopes
We'll see if any further facts arrive, but as it stands, it appears the BF was trying to leave a bad situation, the GF was trying to escalate it, GF acted unwisely and paid for it. Most driveways in Seguin are not very long and it doesn''t take much to fall off a vehicle. I just don't see assault based on this. Hope the dude has a good attorney.

I hope we can agree to disagree.
I never sent anyone to the hospital, especially not an ex-girlfriend or whatever. I don't see where men get a license to shed off hysterical exes like lint from their jet-black skinny jeans.
Maybe I'm just too old and standards have changed, but educated people who don't live in trailers didn't to it that way back when.

Re: Seguin's Mopes & Dopes
I can find no resolution of the previous case; nothing appears in the court records or newpaper since the initial arrest. Hopefully BF at least learned to stay away from troublesome GFs
But a new one:

The woman had $1.00 in her purse. No, I didn't mess up the decimal point."He tapped on her window, which she rolled down halfway, and he asked her for directions to the coliseum."
...
"She turned around to gesture in the direction of the coliseum and when she turned back around she saw that he had a pistol pointed at her face,"

New one:
Our County Judge, retired DPS sergeant, goes to a county commissioner's conference in College Station and gets busted in his hotel room for less than two ounces of marijuana. Per article, hotel staff smelled marijuana smoke in the hallway, called the cops. The cops searched his bag, apparently with permission, discovered paraphernalia and marijuana.
"'There's nothing I can deny. It is what it is,' Wiggins, a former DPS sergeant, said when contacted Thursday afternoon."

New one: BOLO Dandruff-free Shoplifters
Three guys went into Seguin's Walmart, picked up a big garbage can, threw a couple pillows in the bottom of it apparently to muffle sound, put $730 worth of merchandise into the can, and walked out of the store. That in itself gets dishonorable mention for boldness, but what's really notable is that the boosted merchandise consisted entirely of Head & Shoulders shampoo. All sizes and flavors. Apparently everything that was on the shelf.
There's reports that certain shampoos can reduce the effectiveness of drug tests that use hair instead of urine, but my bet is that someone has figured out how to make meth out of shampoo.
Photos of the shampoo bandits at the link. (They have shaved heads, btw).
