Spykes in Kingsland. Only evenings they're open, though, are Friday & (early) Saturday. Rest of the time it's lunch only.

I was going to post that word for word :totap:
What's the name of those 5 brothers who all opened BBQ places? One was in El Camo, one in Temple (or Belton), one out on I-10? Any of those were pretty good.
Mikeska's! Very good stuff there. Haven't been in years though :grumble You guys have me craving BBQ so badly now it's not even funny... only a couple of years to go :waiting:

Shoeps (spelling?) in Belton is very good.

And I agree with the others that Lockhart BBQ is pretty up there.

Smitty's ( the original Kreuz's) in Lockhart is best I've had anywhere. SMOKED PRIME RIB.

Southside Market and Meyer's in Elgin have fantastic sausage

Original Salt Lick in Driftwood is good but not great (other locations around Austin are average at best)

The original Rudy's in Leon Springs is good too (better than the chain/franchised locations)

Only eaten at the Cooper's in Junction, and it is good but a bit salty

Mikeskas and Muellers in Taylor both good last time I ate there but it's been years.

.... if you can't tell I'm very partial to Central Texas slow smoked barbecue. Y'all can keep the pulled pork, St Louis and Memphis ribs, KC style and all the rest. I'll stick with slow smoked brisket, ribs, sausage, and turkey with the slightly spicy dry rub and minimal sauce on the side. Even Houston and DFW style BBQ is too "Yankee" for my tastes :ack:

Yep, one of my two favorites, the other being City Market in Luling. However, I also have to give high praise to the following:
Original Rudy's in Leon Springs
Cooper's in Llano
Schoepf's in Belton
Longoria's in Everman (right down the street from Alpine and Hickory Stick BBQ, but twice as good)

Good if I'm in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't drive out of my way for it:
Hashknife on the Chisholm in Salesville (on 281 north of Mineral Wells)
North Main BBQ in Euless
Hard Eight in Stephenville

On my list to try:
Franklin's in Austin
Snow's in Lexington
Louie Mueller's in Taylor
Success always occurs in private, and failure in full view.

Really need to try them. Heard great things.

And agree with previous posts that all BBQ in Lockhart is good - Smitty's is just best of the best.

Definitely see regional differences within Texas.

Pork Is BBQ. But I don't like it nearly as much as good beef brisket. Pork is easy. Good beef BBQ takes considerable skill and time.

I've had limited exposure to Texas BBQ being a transplant (9 years and counting) and only have eaten it in limited geographic areas. With that caveat, I offer my choices:

Coopers (in Llano, not New Braunfels)
Inmans (also in Llano)
Old Smokehouse (San Antonio)
Texas Pride BBQ (Adkins)
Easy Pickins BBQ (Harper)

I'm sure I am missing a few, but these are the ones that stick out in my mind as awesome BBQ joints...

:tiphat:
You have avoided Smokey Mo's in Bulverde? Wise move!

There used to be a place on the east side of Hwy 71 I believe in Smithville. It was a shack painted barn red and just called Real Pit BBQ. Probably not there any more, but it was some of the best I've had. Also Green's BBQ in Houston which has been closed for years. I have searced for comparable BBQ fare but haven't found it.
There's a little joint in Pasadena that's decent called No-Name; their sauce is a little sweet, though. I'll just have to keep searching for the prefect rib and brisket. I'm pretty sur it's somewhere in Texas! :biggrinjester:

What's the problem? Pork isn't BBQ.

I don't get the fascination with the Salt Lick. I've gone twice and, to me, it just tastes like standard BBQ. A touch better than Bill Millers. Is there a particular cut I should I try? Maybe I'm missing something...

As for Smokey Mo's, I never even knew it existed. Then again, I just escaped from San Antonio only a month ago.

As for the pork critics, booo! I love me a slow smoked pork butt soaking up all the apple wood smoke it can. After a while, mesquite and brisket grows old. I can cook a mean brisket as good as anyone else (yeah, I'm bragging), but chopped pork in a vinegar based sauce is the best. No sugar in my sauce thank you.
