My friend needs new gun at a certain price.Need suggestions.

Post by 68Charger »

He got his CHL a few months back and I'm happy for him. I ask him what he carries and he says a Ruger P95. He carries it in a uncle mikes holster and rarely carries. I keep telling him you need to always carry, no matter what. He says his pistol is too big for him, and I ask what his price range for a new one would be. He said 400 - 450.

He loves the 9mm because it's cheap to shoot and it's the only caliber he really likes. I know I can easily find guns from Buds, or GunsAmerica but I wanted a few suggestions here so I can get some feedback. I told him a Glock (even though I don't like the Glock. Look anyway) and the Ruger LC9, etc..

Just want some feedback from y'all folks.

Thanks in advance. :tiphat:

Gunbroker, Pawn shops, keep an eye open on the for sale pages here...
He should do some shopping and find 2 or 3 models that he likes.... then look at the used market and see if he can find one..
Bottom line, there are lots of good choices for used guns in that price range if you're flexible and a little patient.

Even Glock 26 gonna be a "wide body". Ruger LC-9 is much slimmer and should fall very close to budget mentioned. I find them to be a fine little affordable gun for that "carry niche".

Not sure if it is available, but if it is, a NIB RIA (Commander size) in 9mm would be my choice in that price range. :tiphat:

I carry an LC9 and have liked it so far. It's very simple to conceal, and below $400.

Yeah, quick update. He is trying to look for a Polymer type pistol. XD, Glock, or Walther's..

Well, now that I have some sort of direction, I can get started. Gun shopping is hard? Why can't I just buy all of them? :)

I prefer the M&P to the Glock, here is a link to a compact model on gunbroker.

Well first off I carry my P95 only in the winter. It is harder to carry then my Glock 20 with 6inch barrel but this holster helped a lot. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/530644 ... -suede-tan

It is the only holster that seemed to work well and didn't cost over 30 bucks. The inside the waist makes a big difference but you can still see the grip of the gun when sitting and no light jacket.

I carry my Glock 27 for deep concealment and nobody is the wiser ever! It is the grip of the gun that matters more then anything, not the barrel length or width of the slide(large revolvers of course are not part of this equation).

For a semi auto 9mm I really don't think you can beat a Glock 26 or maybe a 19. I know others will say "Glock Boy" but my Glocks are the only semi-autos that have never jammed on me after thousands of rounds through each. Knock on wood! My Ruger, S&W and Springfield 1911 and Bersa (last two I sold because they were very picky with hollowpoints) have all jammed at least twice and some over 20 times and none of them had over a thousand rounds in each.

If you want something thin and single stack the LC9 seems like a good choice. I like sub compacts with a little more weight and I would look at a Springfield XD for that price range. My buddy is a LEO and carries the full size on duty and the sub compact off duty and has had only a few jams in over 20,000 rounds on his full size. Also other then my Glocks my S&W semi auto has been the next most reliable semi auto that I own.

This is just my 2 cents. Glocks are simple good guns that's it. They are not fancy 1911s and they won't feel as good in your hand as many guns but they go bang.
Try an XD If your friend wants something with a little more weight and capacity then a single stack. They can also cost 100 dollars or more less then a S&W or Glock not to mention a sig and the are still great guns they feel great in your hand. I like them at least.

Glock would be an improvement in a lot of areas, but not a huge one over the Ruger as far as carry comfort. He really needs a better holster, regardless of gun.

What about a snub-nose .38 revolver?

Or a Ruger LCP or LC9? Taurus 709 Slim?

Kahr CW9 or CM9?

I picked up my LC9 for around $325. Long trigger, but your friend can get used to it with training and mine's been totally reliable through 750+ round down range.

The 9mm that I would recommend to checkout for an edc gun (Kahr PM9) would be approximately $200 more, before the night sights.

They don't really fall into your price range unless used. Unless they got cheaper in the last year or so. My brother had a P22 and it was a great gun but the Walthers can get pricey.

Edit: Just checked prices, they have come down a lot! Still in the 500-600 range in anything 9mm or better but I remember when that PPS came out and they wanted almost 800 for them. What a joke! They are good guns though.

Maybe he needs a better holster rather than a new gun. Hume JIT works for every gun I have.

I used to have a Ruger P 95 and had no trouble carrying it with a Hume JIT. BTW a P 95 is no bigger than a Glock 19 or fullsized M&P nor is it any wider than any Glock or M&P.
