Officer is a unknown park ranger PCSD will set up command post. No news helicopters suspect armed with long rifle not in custody.

Officer down, information just coming in. Stay out of area suspect armed with a long rifle on foot.

Don't know condition of officer we are still responding. Happened in mt rainier national park. Numerous units in route.

Park Ranger Margaret Anderson was shot and killed while executing a felony stop near the Longmire Ranger Station in Mount Rainier National Park just before 11:00am.

The suspect had been stopped by another officer near the Paradise Ranger Station, but fled before being stopped again by Ranger Anderson. The suspect opened fire, fatally striking Ranger Anderson.

After being shot, Ranger Anderson radioed for help as the suspect fled on foot. Officers attempting to reach Ranger Anderson were held at bay for approximately three hours as the suspect continued to fire on them.

Ranger Anderson is survived by her husband and two young children.

So, I went and read the story today. Seems pretty tragic, indeed. It also seems like a made-for-TV Hollywood gun-control, anti-veteran movie. I'm sorry, but its as if they took the original Rambo and got one of those anti-war movie people to tweak the plot, and then said, "Let's do this for real"...you can say anything you like about my mental state, etc. All I know is that before Fast and Furious, I would have taken it at face value. Now...?

Now...?

I'm taking it at face value because we all know how this is going to end: with the capture or killing of the suspect. I will grant that AP is probably gleefully pumping up the PTSD/Iraq Vet/Survivalist angle because it fits their narrative—just as not reporting on Fast and Furious early on until they were practically forced to do so was inconvenient to their politics and didn't fit their narrative—but I don't think that this story is part of some nefarious government "black ops" effort to further erode the 2nd Amendment.

That said, I have no doubt that democrats will use this incident to try and force Congress to revisit concealed carry in national parks, and the Brady Center will likely lead the charge. After all, it is liberal SOP to never "waste a crisis," even if they have to gin one up.

Rifle was what was used by the criminal; the credit card bill allowed licensees to carry handguns under their CHL.

Okay, TAM, I'm sure you're correct. The reporting on this thing, then; THAT is the movie plot part of this. Its almost impossible that they aren't spinning this thing, leaving out pieces of information while pumping up other pieces...for instance, its Washington State. Maybe they dude was a meth dealer, or something. Not saying he was, but that is just as likely. I mean, the pic they've got going around of the guy with the MAC clone and Saiga 12...

Well, he certainly was NOT the picture of the average military member or veteran...he spent less than 3 years in and was booted out for being a screw up. MOST guys and gals manage to do their jobs to the best of their ability and make it through at least one enlistment. Also, I'm going to go back to the drug thing. Read how they found him, in the snow, dead from the elements, and dressed in a haphazard manner. Drugs can do some serious stuff to mess up a person's mind. Not personal experience, but I did see some otherwise good troops go bad due to drugs. Not many, but a few. And it caught up with them and they got booted out. So, more and more, it looks like TAM is right. My initial ideas were pretty off-base, I admit...I just hate seeing stories like this. But, of course, the yellow journalism of the leftwing press LOVES it, and they love it to death. Smearing gun owners, AND veterans, in one article? Its like a two-fer for those ghouls. They have all of my contempt.
