Re: Be careful post Christmas...burglars sort through trash.
We have pick up on Fridays. I noticed this morning several houses with flat-screen TV boxes and other "expensive" trash at the curb. It's a sad fact that my first thought was "target for criminals".
I am not a lawyer. This is NOT legal advice.!

Whenever we get a new, expensive toy like electronics I always shred the box with a shop knive so it can go in a large trash bag. It can be a lot of work but to me it is worth it not to advertise new targets. Getting broken into once was enough.

Exactly what I did after my last big TV purchase! Leaving the empty box outside would have been a big neon sign, 'Break into THIS house!'Maxwell wrote:Whenever we get a new, expensive toy like electronics I always shred the box with a shop knive so it can go in a large trash bag. I'll quit carrying a gun when they make murder and armed robbery illegal

Our trashcans are dumpsters in the alley running behind our street and they are shared by half a dozen houses. Guess they'd have to guess WHICH house. Could really confuse them and put the trash in the dumpster for the NEXT set of 6 houses

It's sad for them (the people who leave out easily identifiable, large boxes), but at least the criminals will be focusing on them and not you.

Re: Be careful post Christmas...burglars sort through trash.
Last Christmas I came home early the first day the trash ran. I saw a guy opening up trash bags and going through them. I ran him off but he only went a few houses down. When I called the police I was told there is nothing that they can do because the trash is on a right of way. The little strip of grass between the curb and sidewalk is the ROW. We have to maintain it, set our trash there, but they cant do anything about someone going through the trash in this day and age.

Move it back to their house AND write their addresses on it?speedsix wrote:...well, two of my neighbors musta read wgoforth's post...cause they BOTH left their TV boxes out behind MY house...weasels...but at least you gotta give 'em credit for thinkin'...
Re: Be careful post Christmas...burglars sort through trash.
...they neglected to sign their trash...or I'd have put it in their back yards!!!
Re: Be careful post Christmas...burglars sort through trash.
Oh, I assumed you knew which neighbors, in which case the suggestion meant that you write it on the boxes.speedsix wrote:...they neglected to sign their trash...or I'd have put it in their back yards!!!
I would just collapse/cut up the boxes and make it so that a BG wouldn't be able to spot it.

Although it's kinda' quiet and there isn't much here in the way of shopping or eatin' places, I sure am glad that we live off of the beaten path after reading this.
That said, it would be nice if we had a Hooters and a Hardees instead of the four other hamburger joints in town.
