I like a Joke as well as another.. But just so you know.. In Regional Command East, Afghanistan. We have 7 Brigades under our control, of those, 1 is French.. They have fought, as hard, and in many cases harder than any US unit.. They have lost several Soldiers in the hunt with and for insurgents, as well as suffered many causalities. While I will not stand up for the French leadership, military or Presidential back in France…. I will stand by my French brothers in Arms, in Harm’s way fighting side by side with US, Polish and Afghans every day..

Nor will I remain silent and un physically involved should someone back home make ignorant remarks about the French and their professionalism, tenacity, and bravery in this current fight. Yes there is history, be advised,, it’s HISTORY.

There is history, and then there is history.

How many remember the contributions of the French in the founding of this country? They entered the fray, for our cause, in 1778, guns blazing. Where would we be now if Frenchman like the Marquis de La Fayette had not served as a major-general in the Continental Army? Or for the contributions to the Revolution by de Rochambeau, de Latouche Treville, and de Grasse?

And remember the actual treaty that released us from English control? It was the 1783 Treaty of Paris.

It wasn't the French that wavered in WWII. It was their leadership.

...two points...1)it is MOST OFTEN the leadership...or lack of it that quails in war...the boots on the ground...or the street...are ready, able, and often on a short leash...
........2)every country has their stories...they tell stories about the US in Europe today...non-complimentary as our French jokes...some true...some not so much...they don't take away from what the good ones do...

In any case CNN's security blog is saying that evidence of Grinch SA-24s are involved, as well as some SA-7s. Is anyone familiar with these Grinch should-launched missiles? They sound a heckuva lot like Stingers. Which would be bad.
I agree, especially following the assassination by missile in Yemen last week. We opened the door to AQ attacking USA leaders the same way USA attacked AQ leaders. If that happens we have no credibility on the world stage to complain because they're just doing unto us as we did unto them.

I really hope it doesn't happen because it would virtually guarantee Biden in 2012.
This will only hurt a little. What comes next, more so.

That too; unfortunately, it's not limited to a single party or administration. Why can't we (United States) mind our own business and let these people kill each other off. These are not our brothers and we are not the world police!

Here endeth the lesson. :tiphat:

Because we're the world's richest nation; if we don't bend over backwards to repress the repressors, then they will see us as self-centered, heartless, and evil for refusing to help our fellow man. On the other hand, if we do help, then they (different they... mostly) will see us as self-centered, heartless, and evil for taking it upon ourselves to interfere. Either way, we get hated.

There are two lessons here that the US (and the UN) refuses to learn. First, if you ever do anything, someone will always find a reason to hate you. Second, the more you try to fix it, the greater the number of people who're mad at you. On the scale of national conflicts, whenever you help one group you hurt another -- people tend to remember the hurts more than the helps, and everyone likes to blame the outsiders when something goes wrong. Being the world's police is a no-win role. As long our various treaties/pacts/accords/whathaveyous don't require our action, we should stay well out of other country's conflicts.
