Re: Mitt Romney and Firearms
Rick Perry and Ron Paul seem to be the best on the gun laws. Perry has always been good about signing bills that expand Texas gun rights. Ron Paul, as a libertarian, should be all in favor of constitutional carry.
Romney is more RINO than Republican and, I predict, would have no problems with expanding Massachusetts-style gun laws nationwide. I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw my pick-up truck.
By the way, we need to pay more attention to congressional and senatorial elections, also. Don't let the presidential race take so much of our attention that we get more anti-gun, anti-self-defense leftists back in the congress.

I don't think Romney even knows end of an AR-15 goes bang.
I know Perry does

Thank you all who have replied so far. And it seems, after reading the info at the links supplied by speedsix and TAM (thank you gentlemen), that I am left mostly with the same opinion about Mr. Romney and firearms. Namely that while he isn't a HARD-CORE "gun banner", he still wouldn't like my AR-15 or AK clone very much. Maybe he'd be okay with my son's Mini-14? Who knows, and that is the problem. IF he wins the primary, I will hold my nose (pinched shut very tight to keep out the stench of what I perceive as elitism) and pull the lever...because I will be pulling it AGAINST Obama...but I won't be happy that I'm forced to do so. And as noted by others, making sure we have MORE conservatives in Congress will provide a bulwark against any possible Romney "compromise" with groups like the Brady bunch...
On a lighter note, that is a GREAT picture of Governor Perry...my AR isn't that nice, I might have to do some "purtying up" on it when my cash flow increases someday...

Re: Mitt Romney and Firearms
The sole purpose of a bazillion capacity magazine is to murder as many people as possible ,,, I read that in the Interweb ... I expect he'd ban them on the "sole purpose doctrine" where you can invent a purpose and claim that was the intent of the designer/manufacturer“Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts,” Romney said, at a bill signing ceremony on July 1 with legislators, sportsmen’s groups and gun safety advocates. “These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.”" Mitt Romney, July 2004.
So we'll have to stop taking them to the range, they apparently weren't designed for that, and can't be used for handicapped people who have difficulty recharging magazines at the range.
A little tiny "exception" in a dam, a small leak ... isn't the only thing one should worry about, there's probably more problems under the surface. That little exception or way of defining a possible use of a thing being justification for banning it indicates more problems than are visible on the surface.
I won't be voting for Romney period.
Obama sold more guns than any prior President, though I want him out ALMOST bad enough to vote for Romney ... I wouldn't. (Not that I'd vote for Obama, I'd just try to get a sensible Congress and say "I told you so" again for another 4 years if it was either Romney or Obama)

After Herman Cain's Florida straw poll win he is being taken a bit more seriously. Anyone know what his opinions are on the 2A?

Re: Mitt Romney and Firearms
I looked around a bit and Herman Cain's position on the 2A doesn't seem favorable. It appears as though he believes it is a state and local government's right to regulate guns and that the 2A does not apply to the states.
Also, Romney signed into law a permanent assault weapon ban in MA back in 2004.

I think the summary of Mitt's beliefs lies in his abortion stance. He is neither pro-choice nor anti-choice but ....multiple choice.
He blows in the wind. What ever it takes to get the vote is what he will say or do. Sad.
There is no way to know his position on the right to keep and bear arms. He just wants power.

Despite Newt's transgressions, I think I'm coming around on him. I don't think he has much of a chance, but he's sounding more and more palatable as President.

Re: Mitt Romney and Firearms
Newt's finer points are that he knows history, and it's importance, as well as the Constitution. With all his human faults, he is still well qualified to run the country. One thing Newt has that none of the other candidates have is the total anal exam by the media. No uncovered, undiscovered skeletons in his closet... all old news.

Re: Mitt Romney and Firearms
I think that Newt is the sort of person that would get highly-annoyed that his favorite NFL team had lost a critical play and fling his Nobel Peace Prize at the BIG RED BUTTON controlling all the nations nukes.
Seriously, I think he is too high-strung for the job.

Re: Mitt Romney and Firearms
Here's another perspective on a Mitt Romney presidency:
Since he's a Republican, even if considered a RINO by some, he probably wouldn't mess with our 2A rights.
The biggest problem that we have in this country is the deficit. When he was an executive at Bain Capital,
he was in the biz of buying companies, laying off people, and "parting out" the remains of the acquired companies.
Perhaps he's just the kind of President that would know how to take a hatchet to the federal government departments.
Giving out many pink slips for career bureaucrats might be just up Romney's alley. Savings would ensue.

From what you describe of Mitt Romney in the above statement, he pretty-much sums up what I think is worst about our version of Capitalism.surprise_i'm_armed wrote:Here's another perspective on a Mitt Romney presidency:

That reeks of BATFE "Sporting Purpose" being the "ONLY" legitimate reason to "NEED" a firearm.
The main difference between Romney and Obama is that Obama has signed a pro-carry law. (NPS)
