How many choose to carry a revolver rather than a semi auto?

#1

Post by jonrjen »

I have recently gone to carrying a revolver (small frame 2" 38 special). I have for years carried a semi auto (Glock 27, Kel Tec P3AT, Taurus 709, SR40C, PX4sc). I am just curious as to how many others have either switched their carry choice from the semi to the revolver. Or have always chosen the revolver as their choice of CCW?

Stopped carry of semi about 5 years back. I found I was switching back and forth before then because of concealment issues. Then my physical ailments just made manipulation of my kimber and walther hard. I also worried about muscle memory issues. Now I have a SW 360PD with CT that is with me full time - know its there but so light I don't care. If ailments get worse - probably go back to glock...

While I do carry semis sometimes, my most frequently carried revolver is a Smith and Wesson Model 637. And, anytime wearing boots, a S&W 340 as well. A primary reason for this is the 637, other than much lighter weight, is virtually identical in operation to the Model 36 that I started shooting and carrying in 1976. Bianchi speed strip lets me carry a reload in my left front pocket - not something that is comfortable to do in most of my jeans or shorts with a spare mag for a semi.

Another reason for mostly revolver carry is more related to the biz I am in and the fact that I often let students shoot some of the same semis I carry. And I do not like having to unload the self defense ammo and reload it every time, which can lead to over or underseating cartridges that cost around a dollar apiece.

I carry my SP-101 as a primary carry from time to time but not often. I have my .38 smith snub as a bug but I very rarely carry it by its self.

My answer isn't really responsive but..

Sometimes I need a Phillips screwdriver; sometimes I need a Flatblade screwdriver ... So I carry more than one tool.

I carry a Stainless 5 shot Taurus .357 snubbie revolver in addition to a Glock 26 sometimes.
The revolver is snake shot for legless venomous snakes about to bite me when I'm kayaking or fishing in the woods/brush etc, the Glock 26 w/laser is if there are any 4-legged critters with intent on doing me harm or any 2-legged snakes about to bite me.

Colt D frame fits my SmartCarry better than anything I've yet to find.

And I can shoot it decently well.

This.

For the most part, I carry a semiauto, but I also have a M&P340 .357 I carry from time to time. It's a great gun.

I carry a semi most of the time with a revolver as a BUG, now if its just to run to the corner store I carry the SW642. I like the fact that with a revolver no worries about a FTF, if could only carry one I would take a revolver over semi. But since I can carry both I do 99% of the time.

a 637 Airweight 90% of the time also. I have a semi I carry occasionally but the snub is the go-to piece when leaving the house.
It conceals with just about any attire, is very comfortable to carry, very simple in function, and I shoot a wheel quite often so it is all muscle memory. Anything larger or requiring a compromise of some sort is more likely to result in it being left at home. With the smith, it goes everywhere without issue. Besides, IF there happens to be a FTF/FTE I don't have to work the slide, drop the mag, etc... just pull the trigger again.

In hot weather I carry a Smith 642 in my front pocket as I ride a motorcycle 95% of the time. Otherwise I carry my 1911.

My hot day dirty work carry is Taurus Ultra Lite 5 shot snubbie .38sp. Miami Classic shoulder rig w/ 2 Bianchi speed strips.
You are not under armed w/ a 38sp. If you need more than 5 you are in a gunfight & should alread have or FAST be headed for cover. :tiphat:

A five shot snubby is a great gun to carry for those times when you can't carry a gun. ;-)

I typically carry my Kimber openly while at work and concealed when out and about, but my snubby is in my pocket 100% of the time....even while lounging around the house in pajamas or a bathrobe.
