Re: My hatred of the .40 S&W, by request
Also, I really don't notice a huge difference in recoil from my sub compact s&W in 9mm with +P rounds then my .40S&W in my 27. This is why I never run +P in 9mm for carry(which I do very little of). At that point a figure I might as well carry my .40. Granted this could be just the differences in guns but they both are of similar size and weight and both have a 3.5 inch barrel. Carry what you are comfortable with is still the best advice.

9mm is faster than all the above, except the 10mm.CC Italian wrote: why would I not carry the heavier, bigger, faster bullet?

oh, man, do we have to do this again? Fast != Better.gigag04 wrote:9mm is faster than all the above, except the 10mm.CC Italian wrote: why would I not carry the heavier, bigger, faster bullet?
The image below is from http://ammo.ar15.com/project/Self_Defen ... /index.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. That page alone should keep everybody reading for a while, then maybe this thread will die (if only I would stop responding to Giga's posts ).
(Just to be clear: I'm not saying Giga's opinion is wrong, but I am saying I don't share his sentiments)

I have always liked the .45 and still do. I purchased my first .40 along with some 180gr ammo from TAM some time back. He suggested to use the 180gr ammo.
After a lot of range time and different targets I decided to switch to the .40 in 180gr. I now alternate carry with a G27 and G23 that I had Cold Bore Customs work over the grip of both pistols. I personally do not notice a snap using the 180gr ammo.

All in all a good post.
My main competition gun is a fully custom Para P16-40. It was built specifically for IPSC is the early 90s and I shoot it still today as my sidearm in 3 gun competitions. However for shooting pleasure and/or SD performance, I still prefer a 1911 in either 9mm or .45 ACP.
I have never owned a glock in .40 and to my knowledge have never shot one. Being an avid reloader, I hate the unsupported chamber in the Glocks and the resulting buldges in spent brass.
Your comments regarding recoil. are spot on...I would just consider 40 vs 45 as "different"....not really that one recoils more or less than the other round. I have always found .40s to be snappy and tend to come straight back while the .45 has more muzzle flip. My 9 mm 1911s are really sweet shooters. The commander and the 5" guns do not recoil much more than a .22.

I and my brother as well as others can shoot my G26 more accurately and faster than my G19. Somehow the small Glocks are very accurate, more so than their bigger brothers. Maybe the dual recoil spring setup in the G26/27 helps in this regard.CC Italian wrote:It's the worst round ever because it is a neutered 10mm LOL! In all honesty I have owned all of these calibers and I agree that the recoil of the 9 and 45 are less snappy but my Glock 27 and 20 are the most accurate semi-autos I own. The other two semi autos are a Ruger and Smith in 9mm and neither is as accurate as my 27 or 20. Yes the recoil is snappier but my brother and I both shoot my 27 better then his Glock 17 within 10 yards. We assume this is because the gun is smaller and somehow balances better in our hands.
Maybe you will be able to shoot the G26 even faster and more accurately than your G27?

I have seen all the evidence, and rule we all go buy glock 32s (357sig) and see how they feel.
Maybe USA1 can hook us up.

I shoot better now than I ever did (though that isn't really saying much). I suspect that it has to really do with the ergonomics of the grip.
...haven't been able to shoot one, but the XD45 I held fit my hand better'n any semiauto yet...well designed...

Well, I will agree that you can get a 9mm to go faster then a .40 but if you compare a 124 grain 9mm and a 155 grain .40 you will see that the sectional density of these two are very close and velocities are very similar. Of course I will whole heartily concede in the cost factor. 9mm is a lot nicer on the wallet when going to the range! What ever caliber round we choose all of the aforementioned are adequate for self defense with a pistol (if I could legally conceal a rifle I would)
Re: My hatred of the .40 S&W, by request
...that reminder that the handgun's not nearly as effective as a good rifle/shotgun emphasizes for me why I carry the .45...I can shoot it more accurately than either the 9mm or .40, and with a handgun, shot placement is more important to get all we can get out of a handgun round...
Re: My hatred of the .40 S&W, by request
Can someone correct me if I'm wrong, but there are no laws in the State of Texas governing the carry of long guns (except the infamous "in a manner calculated to alarm") are there? Its just HANDGUNS that require a license to carry...and of course, the fact that long-guns are fairly difficult to conceal considering the amount of clothing most people in Texas wear most of the year...CC Italian wrote:Well, I will agree that you can get a 9mm to go faster then a .40 but if you compare a 124 grain 9mm and a 155 grain .40 you will see that the sectional density of these two are very close and velocities are very similar.
