I would use the link above and call.

They have always been easy to deal with and good with information.

I am not a security guard but I did play one on tv... jk...

It is my understanding that if you are working as private security you need to be licensed to do so. If you want to carry - have the owner pay for you and your counterparts to take the appropriate class, register you, and then you have the right to open carry during the commission of your security duties.

Check with the good folks at psb at the link above

Thanks doc, I actually called them yesterday. Very nice people. As expected, the response was that to do security, you need the proper licenses. My question was how do all the clubs get away with having "bouncers" and she didnt know the answer to that so she was going to find out and call me back. I will post the response when she does for those that are interested or dont already know everything.

I got the approval from our sherrif for off duty deputies to take over this job starting this month so it really doesnt matter but i am still curious how every bar around has bouncers without security licenses. And they advertise it as security when they are looking for help....

Q: How do you know all these "bouncers" are not licensed as security guards? I don't think it's a lengthy process to get the most basic security license that does NOT allow the licensee to carry a gun on the job. The license that allows for armed security is more lengthy, I believe.

Also, please understand I am not a lawyer nor do I have any special knowledge of security laws/procedures. What I am about to relay to you, I got directly from the mouth of the head of the Private Security Division of DPS during CHL Instructor school last summer. To paraphrase (it's been a year): carrying a gun by any means while performing security services for another person or entity (paid or unpaid) without the proper security license/commission is a BIG NO NO and he comes down HARD on people every year who violate this law. There are multiple levels of licensed security guards in Texas - some who can carry on the job and some who can't.

Again, just passing along what I was told more than a year ago. I highly recommend you verify this and all information yourself.

I think the OP has received a number of good replies and good advice in this thread and should heed that advice and definitely not carry while working as a "bouncer".

A-R, Thanks for the info, i had pretty much come up with the same thing.

To answer the question about how i know bouncers dont have security licenses, I have done that work off and on for extra money since i graduated high school in many different bars and clubs. some nice some not so nice and never have I or any of the other guys been required to have any kind of certification or license. Not saying there arent some somewhere that do. I doubt i will ever work as a bouncer again mostly because the hours suck, im getting too old, and i dont need the money, but this whole thing just made me curious. I still have a couple buddies that bounce full time and i know they have no security license.
