AR-15 recommendations

All,

As I no longer own any long guns , I am going to purchase a new scattergun and an AR-15. I'd like some input as to what y'all recommend for the AR-15.

As far as brands, I'm considering Bushmaster, Smith & Wesson (M&P), Rock River, and DPMS. Do y'all have any other recommendations or reasons I should choose one over the other?

Any other advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

I just joined the Evil Black Rifle "club", so I can't provide you with much information at this time. However, I can tell you that I bought a NIB Bushmaster version of the M4A2 at a Houston-area Academy Sports & Outdoors for $899 plus tax. Here's a pic:

Anything you could want, 1/7 twist, chrome lined bore AND chamber, extended M4 feed ramps, upgrade any part you want.
You can customize the gun to suit any need/want.
I'm gonna be building one based on a stainless 16" M4 upper with a medium contour barrel.
Buying the complete upper, stripped lower, parts kit for lower, 5pos. buttstock, and 2x30 rounders (and an engraving of the arabic letters for "infidel" ) puts me right at the threshold of $900!
If you build it yourself, its normally cheaper and you get exactly what you want.

I have a basic DPMS "M-4gery" (Panther Lite 16). It serves quite well for its intended purpose; I have it simply to have a "black rifle."

While it has merely simple iron sights (post front, peep rear) and a non-match barrel, it's still quite accurate. It feeds "normal" weight bullets flawlessly, no matter the brand (yes, even Wolf). I haven't tried any bullets heavier than 62-64 grains in it yet, so I can't say how it will react to them.

I haven't had any malfunctions with it, period, and I've tried to "shoot it stuck" - that is, go without cleaning, trying to get it too dirty to function. It's never stuck, and believe me, I've gotten it quite filthy!

I have no experiences with the other brands, as this is my first and only AR, but DPMS has my endorsement as a result of this rifle.

Thanks for the advice guys. In my search for info on the AR-15, I've come across the Sig556. I'm considering this as an alternative to AR-15. Can anyone tell me anything good or bad about that weapon vs. the AR? I know Sig makes a quality firearm, but would I be better sticking to a standard AR? TIA.

Take a long hard look at Stag. They make quality stuff at decent prices. You don't pay the premium for a brand name either(even though Stag is made by the same folks who make most of the other brands).

If TEOTWAWKI comes will you be able to find parts for that sig rifle?

Just about every burned out patrol car you come accross would possibly hold parts for your AR.

How many people know how to strip it down to tiny tiny bits and put it back together?

Most people with military training could fix (part swap) most of the parts on an AR

Can you upgrade or modify the rifle to your choice?

Model 1 sales has 60+ barrel choices for the AR alone... not to mention stocks, grips, handguards, etc.

What kind of mags does it use?

I dont know if it uses standard AR mags or not.

What will you do for hi-cap mags if the AWB/Hicap ban returns?

I am not trying to turn you away from the Sig, it is a very nice looking rifle. Just giving you some things to think about.

And yes, plain old AR is the more sensible choice. The amount of parts available for them is mind boggling.

Don't get a direct impingment AR15 - the new gas piston models are so much better.

They have their ups and downs to each, most notable is parts availibility/replacement and accuracy.

As far as getting a DI upper over a gasm piston system, get both lie anothetr forum suggest ot members I have been thinking ro replacing my DI with a a adams arms gas sytem but do not wat to buy a new quad rail.
