Just because the rioting is dieing down, I don't believe the rioters have learned anything negative from their experiences. I suspect they have enjoyed and profited from it. So I suspect we will see more of it in the future.
Sounds like decades of namby-pamby policies have conditioned the police quite thoroughly. The powers that be *ought* to look at the level of second-guessing of the police if they want a different outcome in the future

That's true.
The subtext in the police chief's statement is that he knows what to do and is capable of doing it, but he knows that after he successfully puts down the riot, the people and the government will both turn on him and he'll lose his career so he's sitting on his hands and letting the situation the politicians and the electorate have set up play out.
If they want a different result, they'll have to change the rules the police operate under. Otherwise, they should get used to what they're seeing today.

...agreed, handcuffs were designed to be put on the criminals, not the police...the only thing evil understands and responds well to is superior force...
Just to further make me ill. Today on NPR, they were talking about the riots in terms of it was the privilege classes fault for the rioting as if these people were justified for what was happening.
They then turned to the United States and almost acted giddy about the possibility that the underclasses here would rise up against the privilege class and assert their "rights".
Maybe that is what is happening now in Wisconsin and Philadelphia. People asserting their "rights"

In fact many of us are quite the opposite. You notice that the riots that have happened here, have happened in places where gun ownership is highly regulated (detroit, chicago...etc). Especially in TX you riot there you are likely to get shot! And then the police will show up not with rubber bullets but with tear gas bombs, horses, and batons. Yeah--ouchie!
Well, a better recent example of what to expect in apocalypse USA style would have to be New Orleans. Even the military was afraid to enter the city for days and days. It was as if all their helecopters were broken. Only the coast guard was there and only to rescue. Rescue at the hospitals was brought to a halt by the random shooting and looting.
There was a fear and a great hesitation in controlling civil disobedience. Why would we expect any different response today?
I don't....that is why I carry a weapon and several extra magazines. The difference is the populace is armed here. Can the police seize weapons in a situation like that--only if they can spot them! Deep Concealment people!

This is why an AK with a folding stock is good. Katrina taught us that not only can you not depend on authorities to protect you, but some will try to take away your means of protection.

If you know people in Southern Mississippi, it's interesting to listen their opinions why the uncivilized behavior rampant in New Orleans did not spread very far.

I guess in Louisiana the quote was "we shoot and loot"

...you ain't NEBBER lied 'bout that one...country folks say "Don't START none and there won't BE none..."...and they MEAN it...
Apparently these folks don't have the equivalent of our Texas Rangers.
The rule here has always been:
1 riot, 1 Ranger.
We should count our blessings that what we see happening all over London would come to a quick and definitive end if it were ever tried in Texas.
