Re: First Shotgun
dont forget that if are havin issues shooting a 12 but really want one, for about $70 u can find a knoxx recoil absorbing m4 style stock. i got one and my wife (5'2") can shoot full power buckshot most of the day w/o any bruises on her pale/easily bruised shoulder

Re: First Shotgun
My wife has the remington 870 express 20 gauge youth version or the gun. She love it and handles it very well. She is about 5'4" and only about 125 pounds. Maybe something to consider.

My 2 cents... I'd first try a 12ga, with a stock w/recoil-pad, sling, low-recoil buck and if you can swing it, a light. That pistol-grip can be killer on someone without the strength to handle it. 20ga with buckshot should also do the job if the 12ga is really too much. You can also get slug/field barrels for the Mossbergs/Remingtons etc. for additional hunting flexibility/resale value. You and your wife need to practice with the gun, consider how it might be used, learn to reload with your head on a swivel, all while keeping the gun shouldered and on target. If the BG gets up again or another makes an appearance, repeat. Don't "hope" but instead have a plan...rustycase wrote:Actually she said it was too much she fired a 12 guage pistol grip, a 20 guage with regular stock and a 22. she liked the 20 over the 12, but i could tell she was still
uncomfortable with the recoil. she prefferd the 22 overall

Re: First Shotgun
I try to get out at least once every month or two with the kiddos to the local outdoor range. We shoot trap/rifle/pistol, but I sure am glad they prefer shooting .22's. After a 2-3 hours of range time they're grinning ear to ear, have sore hands/arms and are ready for lunch.rustycase wrote:Its getting pretty hard to make it out to the range here latley. I really like knowing that my kids can handle firearms safely, not to mention they know how to field-strip and clean most of the guns we shoot.
When yours are ready to go, take a camera. Good memories for all and to share with the family.

...Mossberg 500C youth model in 20 ga is handy in a house, factory 24" and can be cut(vent rib on mine so didn't)...light, effective, and even a child can shoot it well...I gave $150 at a pawn shop...

The 12 was pistol grip only.

Re: First Shotgun
That's what I did with mine. Magnum 3" slugs feel like heavy-ish birdshot loads and it eliminates muzzle rise entirely. The difference it makes is truly amazing. Here's mine:teraph wrote:dont forget that if are havin issues shooting a 12 but really want one, for about $70 u can find a knoxx recoil absorbing m4 style stock. i got one and my wife (5'2") can shoot full power buckshot most of the day w/o any bruises on her pale/easily bruised shoulder
It's also collapsible, so can be adjusted for smaller persons.
Here's a video I did a while back after I put the Knoxx on it. Note the lack of muzzle rise. This results in much faster followup shots and transitions because you don't have to bring the sights back down to the target.
