Ride-A-Long Introduced me to Fine Handguns!

Did a ride-a-long this weekend with the local sheriff dept. This was the first time with them. I've ridden several times with a buddy of mine up in Arlington PD, but this was much much different. Hat is off to them, those guys are great. Professional, courteous, well informed. We pulled over a Bentley for speeding :) It was a gorgeous car. The Deputy comes back carrying handgun. I asked him what the deal was, and apparently the gentlemen didn't inform the deputy that he had a CHL, and was carrying upon contact, so he was disarmed until license and what not was run through the computer. The deputy asked me if I knew anything about finely crafted 1911's, and handed me this beautiful Ed Brown Kobra lightweight. I asked the deputy if the gentleman in the Bentley would likely notice if I swapped out his Ed Brown for my G36. We had a good laugh, the gentleman was cleared through and given back his weapon. For the record, this was a super, super expensive handgun that I was able to play around with at the owners expense. Felt a little guilty, but I have never seen one, much less held one and so I gave it an extremely thourough look over. Trigger pull was great in case your wondering

All in all, a great time. I learned a ton, and further reinforced the idea I have been piddling around about going into law enforcement. Hmmm. Too bad I'll never be able to afford a 3,000 dollar Ed Brown custom on that budget :)

I'd be filing a report if an officer pulled me over, then let someone doing a ride along play with my $3,000 gun.

I'm not trying to say you necessarily did anything wrong. And a cop has every right to disarm someone if they feel the situation warrants it.

But if you were the person pulled over, would you like for the cop to take your carry piece (expensive or otherwise) back and dry fire it and mess around with it? Or let a 3rd party do so?

It is one thing to disarm for the officers safety. It is another thing for him to then play with my gun. If he likes my car, should I let him take that for a spin too?

Just doesn't sit right with me.

Touche'. Honestly, personally I wouldn't mind if anyone looked over and dry fired me handgun. Granted, this is a Glock, not an expensive 1911. And to be completely 100% honest, I didn't think about this being a bad thing until you mentioned it. I've known the deputy for years, served with him for 3 years in combat in Iraq and Afghan. He knows I am safe with weapons. He knows im not an idiot. He unloaded it and actually left the magazine and chambered round with the owner.

If the deputy and I didn't know eachother and weren't exxtremely close friends, I seriously doubt that he would have let me even touch it.

In retrospect, after reading my initial post I can see how it would seem that this was completely without the owners knowlege. I should have cleared that up from the get-go.

Gotcha. Glad he didn't mind. Did you ask him what he did for a living? A Bently and a 3K 1911, he may have the right idea career wise! (or maybe he just has a lot of debt.)

We did. The stop ended up being about 30 minutes long because the deputy and I were talking to the fella. I am not familiar with realstate, but he did something with buying properties that were foreclosed, flipping them, and selling them. He operates some big business out of Houston. I would feel guilty doing that, especially knowing that so many folks have lost the homes he buys. Yikes. Either way, he apparently made a ton of money to afford that. A Bentley? Wowsers.

Just be careful if your officer friend ever comes back with a Glock 8. It's like the Glock 7, but with a hybrid Klingon/Romulan cloaking device built into the guide rod. A sheriff's deputy took mine to run the serial and accidentally engaged the cloak and dropped it on the gravel. I still haven't found that gun, and it's a shame because it costs more than the chief of security at the N.M. spaceport makes in a month.

I guess I'm going to have to drive over to Roswell and buy another one from that short gray fellow with the gun shop on Main Street.
