AR15 Pistol

#1

Post by steveincowtown »

I am looking to tap into the brains and experience on the board here...

Why do I see to little talk about AR15 Pistols? I am just starting a build, but I can find little/no discussion about them. Are they not worth it? This won't be by only AR, so I am looking for something different and more portable. Any pitfalls? Does anyone else here have AR pistols?

Theyre as expensive as an AR Rifle, without the benefit of being able to actually shoulder and shoot like one.
They're considered a pistol, without the benefit of actually being able to carry and conceal it because its so huge.

So yea, beyond the novelty factor.... just get a SBR rifle, if you really want portability. AR Pistols have no practical application, at least to me.

Just my opinion :thumbs2:

I just can't see the point in them other than as a novelty.

I can kind of see the interest in an AR or AK pistol for use as a vehicle gun or similar. One of my eventual projects is going to be a romanian draco that I SBR and throw a stock on.

That being said, it seems that AR pistols don't gain you even as much as an AK pistol. You've got the short barrel, but you still have that stupid buffer tube sticking out of the back of the gun, making it bulkier.

If you're willing to go the SBR route, I could see a lot of usefulness out of an AR or AK build with a short barrel. As just a pistol though, both seem a lot more like range toys only. Just my .02 on it.

I've got one and its a great truck gun. The buffer tube "acts" as a sort of stock, and it's easier to get one than it is a SBR (in the time and money department).

interesting. So can you get any kind of cheek weld to line up the sights? Just looking at them, seems like you'd have to break your neck to get your eye low enough.

If that buffer tube is usable as a stock, then the equation changes dramatically, at least when it comes to my opinion on the matter, which is worth at least what you paid for it....

I'm using an ACE pistol buffer on a PWS Diablo upper, and get an extremely good cheek weld against it. It's a fun range toy. Too loud for home defense IMHO, would blow out either my or my kids ear drums. I'm planning to SBR it, so the pistol setup is somewhat temporary.

Difficult to shot also and unlike a normal pistol you still have to deal with the buffer tube. It's just not worth it imo.

They are super cool and have that WOW factor but I think I can do better accuracy wise with a regular pistol at less than 50yds. They are loud, powerful, and compact just not that applicable.

Thanks to a couple of you guys in this thread I had to Google "SBR". Just added one of those to my ever growing list of guns to buy/build!! I need a raise.

"rlol" And since I'm already going to want to set up a trust for ONE SBR, might as well do a couple....and maybe a suppressor or two....

I need a raise too. :biggrinjester:

novaman...

Excellent point on the AK pistol vs. AR pistol. Thanks to others who replied. I am thinking of this item as a novelty piece and also as an intermediary home defense piece between my G23 and Tactical 870. Realistically, from the comments above it sounds like it may cause temporary blindness/deafness if used inside my home in a low light situation.

I just ordered another pair of AR lowers... one will be a pistol build. The more I've looked into them, the more I'm excited about the possibilities.

I have zero interest in SBR's since I'll be building this extremely cheap. You can still use the buffer tube as a stock, and if you can't figure out how to carry it concealed, you aren't trying hard enough :thumbs2:

As for HD, I'd use it over a shotgun (and shotgun over a pistol).

The SIG556 doesn't have the issue with the buffer tube sticking out of the back with the short gas system, so they're fairly small.

They're a fun range toy
Excelent zombie defense weapon
Powerful pistol
Good for HD since you can keep 60rds on the weapon pretty easy.
A sling can serve well as a stock for stability is you use it right (check youtube)
You can conceal carry them in a pack if you're going to a real bad part of town. :smilelol5:
You can get some flash hiders that direct the noise downrange instead of sideways (Noveske) to make it easier to shoot around one.
Very accurate to 50+yards witht he right ammunition for your barrel.
Fun to shoot one-handed at arms length.

I've got one I'm selling because I don't have anything else in 5.56mm and my shooting buddy (the wife) doesn't like the blast.

The current issue of Shotgun News has a good article about AR-15 pistols vs SBRs. :tiphat:
