Everything about this story is a sad commentary on wasted opportunities, wasted potential, wasted life. And when the grand jury finishes ruling on the shooting, nothing good will come of that either -- any way it falls.

Sounds like a tough place to live if you have a run in with the local LEOs

Somebody give officer Berchtold some more ammo quickly while he is on a streak. That guy is saving his county thousands-if not millions-of dollars by avoiding incarceration and associated court costs to include the appeals process.

Either version is a bad situation but I can't help wondering if this would have made it past the local news if the guy was an auto mechanic.

So your solution to crime and saving money is just have the cop be judge, jury and executioner? While I think a cop has a right and duty to protect himself and the public, suggesting that he kill more people to save money is just sick. I hope you were joking because that is just too far. :mad5

Let's hope it never gets to this:

In my first post:

After reading it, I think it sounded like I was beating up on the local LEOs. That was not my intention.

Sure would have been nice if someone at Fort Hood would have aimed a little higher.

This situation is really hard to judge with the minimal information given. According to the son, a deputy struck Turner in the legs after he started walking away. He fell, dropped his beer and the sound of the beer bottles bursting caused a deputy to draw and fire. (I would find that difficult, but not impossible, to believe. If Turner was on the ground facing down, what would the threat be to the officers?)

According to the Sheriff's office, Turner became combative and struck a deputy in the back of the head with two beer bottles in a bag, and that's when a deputy fired. The critical elements of the case are the locations of the various deputies in relation to Turner, where the bullets struck him and at what angle, and the location of the beer after the shooting. If there's video, that may resolve these issues.

In any case, I don't think it's possible to judge what took place with the small amount of clearly conflicting information we have.

It's sad that a kid who showed such promise and made it to the NFL went on to live a life filled with alcohol and arrests and trouble.

Another followup article. http://www.bakersfield.com/news/local/x ... f-shooting" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Turner apparently claimed to have been using rock cocaine since his NFL days. Perhaps that explains why his career was so short.

The Sheriff's department review board has ruled that the shooting was within departmental policy.
