Yugo SKS mods

#1

Post by suthdj »

I bought a yugo SKS awhile back and was looking at some mods like the "evil" high capacity mags and fiber stock etc. I was speaking to sales guy at cabela's and he said he has heard everyone complain about the add on 20-30 round mags. Since I like first hand knowledge has anyone here done mods to an SKS and how did it go?

Never had a Yugo, but the aftermarket mags never worked right on my chinese sks, and would never even fit in the mag. well on my Russian. The only hi-cap I ever had success with was the factory Chicom fixed 20 rounders. I had one that worked great, but it was a pain to strip in 10 rounds, then 10 more to fully load it. My 2 cents.

I tried the 20 round mags on mine. They are okay if that's what you want, but I went back to the OE ten rounders with stripper clips.

It had a cheap folding stock on it when I bought it, but I didn't like it too much. Bought some SKS wood, refinished it and installed it.

About the only mod I might consider doing to it is purchasing a Monte Carlo stock for it to extend the lenght of pull.

Not my cup of tea, but if that's what you want you can find mods that work with them.

My advice is to buy an AK if you want an AK. The price difference has shrunk a lot and I don't see much advantage to putting a larger magazine on the SKS, especially when so many of the aftermarket SKS magazines are unreliable. I wouldn't change anything on an SKS except maybe stock and sights.

After doing some more reading(http://www.victorinc.com/SKS-FAQ.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) I think I will give up the idea of any mods, between the unreliability of hardware and all the different laws to keep it in compliance it is just not worth the effort.

The mods requirement goes beyond rediculous. To make it sillier, a lot of the parts you need are unmarked so there is no way to prove or disprove American parts.

I know people that have used larger cap mags in their Yugo with no problems. The problem comes in that you have to follow BATFE compliancy requirements to legally modify a SKS. To use detachable mags the U.S. parts requirement must be met. However, there is no law against buying or owning a SKS modified by someone else.

If you have an SKS I would also suggest you get an AK if you want something with removable mags.

for what it's worth, the cheap 20 round Promag magazines didn't work worth a durn in my (former) Yugo. Not worth the bother in an overweight, bulky, inaccurate rifle...in my opinion.
