"I don't know if it's that they saw me through the broken window or they heard when I cocked my gun," Ridgeway said. "I don't know what it was, but that's when they left." :fire

his three vehicles were in the driveway
nothing says i'm home like 3 cars in the driveway
Ridgeway says the burglars left behind a pair of shorts and a machete the size of a yard stick.
I'm not so sure they were there to just steal a tv or two.

Ridgeway says the burglars left behind a pair of shorts with a brown stain on the back side and a wet spot on the front and a machete the size of a yard stick. Police have taken both. They are still patrolling on the ground, looking for those suspects.
There I added an additional detail left from the article.

Homeowner Ray Ridgeway says it happened just after 6am Wednesday, when he heard the glass shatter and the commotion at his front door, so he cocked his gun. Then as one round fell out of the chamber, he says three suspects took off running and jumped into a small pickup truck.
Sounds like he was acting like he was in a Hollywood movie. I think we covered this in the movie pet peeve thread. :headscratch

Had a round chambered, but he racked the action anyhow.
Good thing he didn't need that last round

This brings up a good question. Is it better to make a sound like racking a slide and avoid a shooting someone or well wait and start shooting?

The only reason I would rack the slide was if

1. I didn't keep one in the chamber.....
2. I wasn't sure if there was a round in the chamber

The only time they are going to hear me rack the slide (on my shotgun) is when I just shot his buddy and I'm fix'n to shoot him.
Gun control is like stopping drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to drive.
