The Naming of Cats

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey -
All of them sensible everyday names.

There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter -
But all of them sensible everyday names.

But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?

Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum -
Names that never belong to more than one cat.

But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover -
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.

When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

- T.S. Eliot

I know some poems, too...
Jabberwocky

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought--
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! and through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

There's also one about a guy from a city in Massachusetts, but I can't quite remember it all... :headscratch

Interesting your puppy works in a lab and I just sent my puppy's DNA to a lab to find out what he is.

Speaking of a Prius..I was working in downtown Houston yesterday. While walking to my building, I saw a Prius with CA plates go flying the wrong way down Smith St, then take a right turn wrong way down another one way street, then approach a light (they must not have noticed was backwards) and attempt to turn left wrong way on yet another one way street. Fortunately cross traffic stopped them long enough for an alert pedestrian to yell that they were going the wrong way.

Don't see that every day. :leaving

Hmmm...

I rode with a man in a Prius
Who thought people couldn't see us
The wrong way he went,
But the Prius got bent
And people were glad they couldn't be us.

Alright -- I've left plenty of room for improvement!

A pedestrian in Houston? That is indeed a rare sighting.

The was a young man in Washington,
Who felt that no one deserved a gun.
But then what if threatened,
By felon unfrightened?
Said he, “Well, they should just turn and run.”

Laugh if you will, and I wouldn't own it if I hadn't gotten a deal too good to pass up from my parents, but the Prius (aka the Smug-mobile, because most owners are Smug about it) does get awesome mileage. Now if only I had a magic wand to turn it into something less "smuggish". I REALLY do not believe I'm saving the planet when I drive it, I promise.

Or better still...

There was a young man in Washington,
Who felt that no one deserved a gun.
But then what if threatened,
And with only a second?
He Said, “I would call 911."

The comedian Demitri Martin talks about cats.
My friend Steve likes cats. People are always saying ‘Oh, Steve’s really a cat person.’ No, he’s not. If Steve were a cat person, it’d be, like, ‘Hey, Steve never goes in the pool.’
I love his humor. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoCRmfJP ... re=related
