The number one statement that can be expected from people who are interviewed afterward is, "I never thought it could happen here." I think many people blindly follow that mentality, as judged from the responses to these kinds of tragedies. No one seems to want to except responsibility for their own well being, also portrayed by the individual being interviewed when he stated that, "there's three cops who live here, about eight apartments down from where this happened." What, just because some cops live nearby means that all is well in utopia and they will somehow magically keep anything bad from happening to you? All I can say is pull your head out of the sand and accept some self responsibility for you and your family's safety. On another note, it sounds like a horrible tragedy and I hope those involved are caught.

That's just my thoughts/comments on this, so expect to get what you paid for it.

In early May of 2010 about a week after we moved into our new house in Sugar Land our house was broken into while we were at home.

Fortunately, the bad guy must have thought the house was empty because I don't think he even stepped foot in the house. When he kicked the back door open and realized that the house was occupied and took off.

I was awake and getting my gun, heading toward the bedroom door when I heard the back door give way and finally come flying open. I opened the bedroom door about a half a second after the back door came open and saw no one but an open door and broken frame.

I shouted for my wife to call 911 and I cleared the house.

Fortunately no one was hurt but the perpetrator did steal my peace of mind.

It can happen to any one anywhere. Don't let others convince you that you are to cautious. Alway stay vigilent.

People are so blinded anymore. I want to trust my neighbors but I can't. I trust the fact that my 120lbs Rott keeps the back half safe. It is my responsibility to do the rest. No matter how many officers live in my hood.

Me too. I feel literally naked without it.

The catch is, my family doesn't know. I don't want them to get freaked out. My wife is starting to get it, but not enough for me to openly carry at home. I carried for a year before she knew that I carried outside the house. Now she is fine with it and likes it, but taking that mentality breaks her sense of security a home.
When I think she can get that it's not "being paranoid", we'll talk more about it.


PS. I've been told that me being actually naked would be more scary than a gun, but I like my neighbors.

My wife knows I carry all the time. My best neighbor probably knows it.
The wife can shoot and she knows where to find a loaded gun - hers or mine - if she needs one.
No dog, but we need to do something about that.

O.K, I confess. I freqently sleep with my J frame. At the end of the work day I usually change into a comfortable pair of cargo shorts and slip a J frame into a pocket. Quite often I will sleep in the cargo shorts in lieu of pajama bottoms. I don't bother to remove the J frame and I have never felt any discomfort while sleeping with the J frame in my pocket. Does anyone else do this?

i have been training myself (and now my wife) to carry at ALL times when at home. I make sure to have a loaded weapon within arms reach at all times if i'm wearing something that isn't conducive to CC at the time. I am still waiting on my CHL to be approved, so for now - it's only around the house and in the car under MPA.

Stories like this one, while sad unnerving at times, are fantastic motivators for the rest of us.

Not Paranoid just prepared... I would much rather that we NEVER have to use deadly force but...

I have a phobia of shooting a gun half-awake during the course of a nightmare, so I keep them out of arm's reach when in bed.
