GA: Off-duty cop robbed and shot

#1

Post by seamusTX »

In Stone Mountain, Georgia, Monday night two men robbed and shot an off-duty police officer. The officer is in critical condition but expected to survive.
... the 3-year veteran officer who had a gun but had left it in his car, according to police.
Today a suspect was arrested. Another suspect is being sought.

goes to show a gun in the hand is worth 2 in the car.

I wish the officer a speedy recovery, and hope the other suspect is quickly caught and they both get a long free stay in a room without a view.

Somewhere or other (I can't provide a link) I read that a surprising number of LEO's
do not carry when off duty.

If true, then wow - you have a job where you meet lowlifes on a regular basis, but you don't
carry off duty? Sheesh.

*facepalm*

here we are jumping through some of the tightest hoops on the planet to be able to carry concealed and this guy, who is encouraged to do so, doesn't.

i'd be willing to bet that once he's recovered and mobile again... he's NEVER without one or two in his waistband again.

...back in the when, it was more common for LEOs NOT to carry off duty than to do it...one thing I beat into my rookies' head...if I ever caught them without one...I'd make 'em pay...the responsibility you pin on with the badge doesn't punch a clock, and then, as said above, there's the personal safety factor...no excuse for a cop not to be armed anytime he's out, in my hard-headed opinion...sorry this guy didn't agree...

I used to frequent a few LE forums when I was an aspiring LEO and I was surprised at the number of cops that did not carry or regarded their guns as little more than a necessary evil.

The article says there was a warrant out on the guy. Do they do arrest warrants differently up there? IIRC, isn't the wording on them such that anyone reasonably capable of making the arrest and aware of the warrant would be under a court order to do so if presented with the opportunity? Isn't there some law that protects a person acting exactly as directed by the court?

Some officers see carrying an off duty weapon as a form of uncompensated work for their agency. They refuse to do it when they're not being paid to do so.

These are the same guys and gals who refuse to train or enhance their survival skills unless they're being paid to do that too.

The reasoning (or lack thereof) speaks for itself.

(facepalm)

What else can I say?

...those are the same guys who lie that they're too far away to back you up on a potentially bad call...and you pass them at the next intersection...they're just there for the paycheck and have no sense of calling nor duty...I actually had a sergeant over night shift tell HQ that the fight had broken up that they'd sent me to...when I passed him at the end of the service road(he was leaving)...I found about 50 indivs. from one bar and 30 from the next bar over mixing it up on the lot...had one guy pull a knife...raised my prosecutor to disarm him and someone behind me grabbed it...pulled my revolver and the knife disappeared...told everyone the wagons were on the way and everyone on the lot would go to jail when they arrived and the rats melted into the ratholes for another drink...my heroic sergeant, who'd never even gotten out of his car...checked in as being down for coffee...he never could look me in the eye again, for some reason...
...there's them you'd wade through Hell with...and them you wouldn't walk with in a parade...

I didn't change it - I only highlighted your phrase in color.

Perhaps one of the other mods did so before I saw your post.
