[Wasn't sure where this would fit but I'm excited and not too worried about it!]
Hey - I'm excited and wanted to tell y'all that my best friend from High School is back from Iraq!
He was there for a full year as a combat engineer attached with infantry. His year in Iraq was his 3rd, he wouldve had only one year left sateside, but he signed on for 6 more. About 3 months ago, he got his E-5 (seargent), and is now an NCO.
In his year there, he was attached to some other interesting missions as well. He did some door kicking/house raiding with the marines since they didnt bring they're own engineers. He also volunteered/got selected to attach to a seal team for a semi covert op.
He's now stationed in Colorado and is excited and anxious about re-assimilating back into stateside life.
He did have one piece of bad news, kind of frustrating. All the guys that came back have huge stores of liquid cash, upwards of $30k, and many of them are fresh out of HS into the Army and have never been in the "real" world (was is real...so...no flames on that) as in bills and stuff, and they are blowing alot of their money.
Another bad story he told me was a couple of guys were back, and went to eat and had a few drinks. While walking to a bar, they got jumped and the crap beat out of them, and the punks took all the cash they had, and their wallets and everything. THAT frustrates the mess outta me.
But, all in all, it's good to hear he's back safe, and he should be down in a week to chill and catch up. We're gonna go fishing on an island cove off of matagorda bay

He's going to be stationed in CO. I'm sure he'll get a chl for CO (which has full recip w TX). He and I were avid shooters together up until 3 yrs ago. In his squad, when they were not door kicking but out on patrol he was the midrange guy for a while, 700yd range. (scoped M-14). Then as he became squad leader he moved to an M-4 w/ M-203 gl on it.stevie_d_64 wrote:That may change now that we got those new laws that go into effect here in September...SJRTX wrote:That last story pisses me off. As far as blasting the BGs, I'm all for it, but I'm sure the media would put some fun spin on how these war hungry soldiers went out to raise heck all thanks to W going into Iraq or some liberal garbage rhetoric.

As for the "wads of cash" returning vets have saved up, we've prepared for that.
My oldest (age 18 ) left today for Basic Training (OSUT, actually... he'll be a 19D Cav Scout). He'll be earning a $19,000 signing bonus. Every dime of that will go into his credit union account here at home, and I'm joint holder of the account.
I'm also joint on his checking account, and if he is sent overseas, then whenever his balance goes above $1,500 I'll transfer the excess to his credit union savings.
Our credit union is the old-fashioned type, not one with a community charter. It's not online, doesn't have checking or ATMs, and is only accessible in person or on the phone. There are never more than two people working there at once.
I don't have to worry about him raiding his savings on a young man's whim. :D
If he gets out after his contracted 3 years, he'll have GI Bill for school, and probably $40,000 as a nest egg.
