Re: Renewal Class - Disappointing
Several classes I've worked with do it that way. You go over safety, etc, and the shooting portion early in the class. After the range qualification, the new students are sent to lunch, and the renewals finish their classroom portion. They are finished by the time the new students return from lunch.

I am so pleased to see this coming from another CHL instructor, MoJo. You have my most sincere compliments. You demonstrate professionalism at its best; the instructor's actions as reported are the absence of professionalism.MoJo wrote:Report him to DPS they will straighten him out.
If a student experiences this in a CHL class he would be, in my opinion, as guilty as the intructor, if not worse, if he fails to report it to the DPS. He would have a reasonable expectation of what this instructor could be expected in the future to put on the street carrying a concealed deadly weapon.

Yes, there were seven renewals in the class I attended. We shot while the new folks watched a video then took our test while the rest were getting their pictures taken. We, the renewal students, left and the initial class continued.
Class started at approximately 0830, and I walked out with signed CHL-100 in hand shortly before noon.

Thanks, 322da rules are just like laws they aren't suggestions if they apply to me then they apply to all instructors. There are rumors of some "instructor" in my area that takes the money and issues a CHL 100 that's it! If I ever find out who it is I will drop a dime (probably 50 cents now days ) on them in a New York second.b322da wrote:I am so pleased to see this coming from another CHL instructor, MoJo. And that is significantly less than the required four hours of training.Afff_667 wrote:Yes, there were seven renewals in the class I attended. The state operates on a 50 minute hour, allowing for a 10 minute break every hour on the clock. IF the class took no breaks, it is possible that the requirement was sufficiently met.MasterOfNone wrote:And that is significantly less than the required four hours of training.Afff_667 wrote:Yes, there were seven renewals in the class I attended. Re: Renewal Class - Disappointing
I think this is a common misinterpretation of the concept of a break. A four-hour class with ten-minute hourly breaks is not the same as a 3:20 class with no breaks, and a ten-hour class with ten-minute hourly breaks is not the same as an 8:20 class with no breaks. Though the amount of content is the same, the length of the class is still the time between starting and ending.KC5AV wrote:The state operates on a 50 minute hour, allowing for a 10 minute break every hour on the clock. I find nothing in the code that explicitly spells out the use of breaks either way. But I have witnessed my wife's state-approved online defensive driving class that required her to sit and wait until the end of the six-hour period despite finishing the content much earlier.

Quite right, and that's why I always make sure that the classes I teach are at least the minimum required.MasterOfNone wrote:I think this is a common misinterpretation of the concept of a break. Careful patting old timers on the back. You might knock one over.b322da wrote:Sorry, AR. I only pat pretty girls and old timers like MoJo on the back. I see your picture on your posts, and ....Oh No!austinrealtor wrote: Hey I'm a CHL instructor and I said report him too where is my pat on the back?

Re: Renewal Class - Disappointing
If 4 DPS hours are 3 hours and 20 minutes of non-stop instruction, then assuming no breaks and no time for admin/paperwork (not instruction) and no more than 5-10 minutes for the test (including grading) it's possible they finished in slightly less than 3.5 clock hours without breaking the law.KC5AV wrote:The state operates on a 50 minute hour, allowing for a 10 minute break every hour on the clock. Re: Renewal Class - Disappointing
From what I have seen of this forum many who carry come here because they are confused about the law. The point of this forum is to help end the confusion. Won't happen though because the law isn't cut and dried. The wording of the law creates confusion in itself. When those who carry become so confused about the law they are unwilling the protect themselves because their more concerned about breaking the law than they are about defending themselves then the law serves those people no justice. In other words sometimes it's best to depend on common sense. Just ask yourself this, do you want to obey the law and die or do you want to defend yourself and live?Re: Renewal Class - Disappointing

Can you imagine how dangerous it would be to carry and not know the law?
This instructor did a huge disservice to these students.
