Wife looking for Nursing Job in Houston

She has a BA from Baylor, BSN from U of H, and is a RN ( passed boards) Summa cum laude with a 3.85 Gpa
Maybe someone knows someone, she has had only 2 interviews in the past 4 months since she graduated

If Sugar Land is not too far, they have several new hospitals. St. Lukes, Methodist, etc.

Thanks but she has applied at most every Hospital along with sugarland, there are tons of jobs but very few for new nurses. You just about have to know the HR person personally.

Things have really changed in nursing since the economy went south. Just a few years ago hospitals were paying huge sign-on bonuses. My wife is a nurse with the VA and said you can check http://www.usajobs.opm.gov/ for openings in your area. Results there may not be any better though. I can tell you that the VA has great benefits. Plus she'll be doing a good thing for the people that are serving our country.

Sadly, our friend-in-law who is a highly paid Senior oncology nurse in a DRs. office in B'ham recently told us the same story. New nurses (RN's) who once commanded high sign-on bonuses before graduation are now out looking for jobs after graduation.

Woe is us...and it ain't all Obama's fault.

I agree, its not all Obama's fault, Hospitals have had budget cuts, donations are down, government support is being cut. Nurses who were going to retire put it off for a few more years. However the schools are continuing to push students out the door. Good news is the predicted demand is high in a aging population.

Its just my wife is very smart, and good looking, and has a way with baby's and children, (she put up with me for the last 20 years)

Uh oh, contrary to all the pablum we're fed, age bias along with several other preferences (read prejudices) still in exist...in all quarters.

If she would consider Home health it can be awesome! Also for experience sake make sure she checks on Per diem jobs - gets your foot in the door. In addition, freestanding clinics, doctor's offices etc. While the money isn't as good it gets some experience on the resume.

Wish her the best. I have been in nursing (LVN) for 24 years, and am finishing my RN degree (hope to be done with college before my oldest daughter). Hard to believe when they moan about the nursing shortage that it is so hard to find a job!

Does she keep in touch with any of her friends from school? Maybe they could share some searching tips or job leads.

my mother teaches nursing. they just had a graduting class last week. she told me their students where having a very hard time finding jobs.most places are not hiring as many and want experienced nurses.she said utmb normally hires about 60 people from their graduating class this year they offered jobs to 5 of them.

I was a Paramedic for 15 yrs and actually moved here from WA last month for family but I'm working as a RN (2 yrs ER experience in WA) at Memorial Hermann

Apply for any and all open positions on every Hospital website...

Once she is in she can then transfer to the dept she is actually interested in working...

Oh and although it's not fun... Nursing homes maybe?
