When it comes to checking ID/Phone #'s/Zip Codes, I estimate 90% of the time I am met with "deer in headlights" look by cashiers and I complete my transaction without any further chitchat. The other 10% of the time, retailers will insist on checking ID and I tell them no. They will not process the transaction so I either pay with cash or I leave for their competitor. It has potential to be inconvenient, but I am sick and tired of trying to prove I am a good guy.

If I am ever "exposed," you said it best... don't argue with fools. Simply ignore them and carry about.
I understand where you're coming from, but no need to be rude to the people who are REQUIRED to ask per company policy. They're just doing their job.
Just want to clarify... I am never rude about it. I am always polite but firm.

Examples:
THEM: May I have your zip code? ME: No, you may not.

THEM: May I see you Drivers License? ME: No, you may not. THEM: Why not? ME: My Drivers License is none of your business. THEM: :headscratch Uhhhh.... *paging Manager*

I don't know about fines (and I'm not bored enough to read the whole document) but
at the risk of adding fuel to the fire, see section 5.8.4 of the Mastercard agreement.

I will see if I can look up the source info next time I am at that job, I have a part time job at bestbuy which I have worked at for close to 5 years now, about 2 years ago we updated our policy and they may have cited the clause, during training we were told the compnay could be liable for up to a 10,000 dollar fine for breaking our agreements with the credit card companys be it visa / mastercard / who ever they all have similar policys

I will add that we are allowed to verify your license and ask you to sign an unsigned card before accepting it, and in most cases we are required to verify the last 4 digits on the card, this is to prevent credit card fraud

By the creditcard company, when I say allowed, I mean with out penalty, granted your unsigned credit card is not "valid" and does not have to be accepted anyway.

Same here. Shortly out of college, I had my wallet stolen. The perp charged groceries, porn, electronics, and three cab rides on it. Ever since then, I want them to check my ID.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but did you ever look up the ID requirement at your job. I was in Radio Shack trying to use my CC's today and wasn't in a particularly good mood and in a hurry. The guy wanted my DL to use any credit card. I called both Mastercard and Visa on the spot amd they weren't helpful at all, saying it's not their policy but it may be store policy. :banghead: I decided to use Amex and the guy then required my CID # and I absolutely refused. I told him their is no way he's getting the security code off my CC. He told me it wasn't a security code it's a CID. :headscratch Duh! I called Amex after I left and they couldn't understand why a FTF retailer would need it and I was right to refuse. I'm just wondering who I would write to report Visa and MC refusals for lack of ID.

The back of my credit cards all say, CHECK ID, in the signature area.

The back of my cards all have my signature on them...right in the box that says signature. You're not liable for charges you don't make, so the CC company gets to eat it. You call them up and report your stolen card and get a new one.

Letting every "Tom, Dick, and Harry" review (and potentially memorize) your identity documents facilitates identity theft. If you just present a signed card, all they have is your card #. If you want them to be able to open an account in your name, then by all means let them have your DL#/Address/etc.

Unless they have a photographic memory, I am safe. If they start writing the info down, we have a problem. It takes about three seconds to verify the name on my license. Not enough time for a person working across the counter at a store to memorize my ID. I am not wanted by the law, so I don't mind someone verifying my ID before charging up my credit cards. I usually encourage them and tell them how much I appreciate them making sure I am legitimate. I even tell them to keep up the good work. ;-)

My credit card has a picture of me and my family, taken at the beach last year, on the front of it. It is not like a little passport photo sort of thing, it takes up the entire card. Funny watching people take it, look at it, look at me, and then figure it out. They all think it is cool and I have never been asked for ID because of it. BTW, it is not a picture of us on the beach, it is a nice pic of us all dressed up and ready to go out to eat. Very nice family photo.

I got curious and decided to Google this idea. I found interesting info on it. What I found was that a lot of police and security "experts" will tell people to do this but in most cases it is pointless... LOL. The P.O. has been known to refuse credit cards that don't have a signature on them. An especially anal retentive employee did this to me a couple years back. The next day his boss told me he shouldn't have done that and would talk to him. From what I just read, he was technically correct. The advice I found for those that want to put see ID on your card is to sign it and put it on there.

Interesting stuff. I also found a page that said the merchants are not suppose to refuse to sell to you if you won't show ID. I can tell you that I have been to a couple places that will refuse the sale. Best Buy was one of them. The risk of someone getting your address was not on the list. The whole exercise of writing it on the card as being pointless was mentioned...LOL. I can believe this as I have been to many places where I just swiped the card.

Well heck... I think I am going to do both. Sign them and put check ID on the back. My AMEX has no place for a signature.... I am not sure what that is all about. I would like to get cards with my pic on them. Not all cards offer this. :cheers2:

If you find one on which you can put an image across the entire front, see if you can include the words "This is the only person authorized to use this card" (or similar) as part of the image.

let me see, my creditcard agreements all have on there that the card isn't valid unless signed and the retailer or merchant may refuse my card at anytime for any reaeson, and I should be required to show ID that has the same name as the card, it rarely happens but it is a very good idea it saves the CC company alot of money and us money in the long run

Most of the time I appreciate getting ID'd for a charge sale and I actually thank them. In this case besides being in a hurry, the guy that insisted I show ID wasn't even waiting on me. The item only cost 8 dollars and some change. I could use my debit/credit card as a debit with no ID. A debit transaction has no protection for the consumer. I know that for certain when my brand new debit card was used 5 hours later after I bought something. They somehow managed to get my PIN and bought a few items and got cash.
Many places I use a CC don't even require a signature for less than 50 dollars so it's not about security.

I usually let things like this slide but the guy was just a jerk and butting in. Radio Shack used to have a data base of names and phone numbers and they asked for it to keep track of your purchases. Whether it's a good idea or not to require picture id wasn't really my question. I was trying to find out if it's a violation of their covenant/agreement with the credit card issuer.
