Re: Property Defense in West TX Question
I guess I just find it sad that we even have to discuss this. Does anyone else find anything wrong here?
With the way sentiment is running these days you might as well leave your insurance card in the shack so they can stop at the local hospital and have a baby on your dime, and mine.
Sorry, but it just eats me up and I really feel for those of you that are closer to it than I am.

They don't need the insurance card.johnson0317 wrote:I guess I just find it sad that we even have to discuss this. Does anyone else find anything wrong here?

...thanks for clarifying that...I was speaking to the OP...which had to do with on his property, not driving in Texas...on your own property, you can carry openly or concealed on your person or in a vehicle...off your property, it does have to be concealed...Skiprr wrote:I think it's worth pointing out that the statement about open carry in a car is incorrect under Texas law. I understand the practicality of leaving the door unlocked so they don't damage the property. It's just such a sad state of affairs that honest, law abiding Americans are used to the idea of surrendering their property to illegals and want to do it with as little hassle as possible.
The reconquista is here, and we're just sitting back and watching. Dept of Homeland Security is busy seizing domain names of websites that stream tv shows, or poker websites (can't have Americans spending money how they want, no sir!), or cracking down on Nissan Skyline owners. Sure am glad the border is so secure!
Seems everyone with property down there has accepted the reality of letting it happen because its happening so often, with no relief from the govt in sight. Sure, Mr and Mrs illegal, come in, use my property, I can't stop you. No wonder people feel entitled to our money for welfare, medical care, education, etc. We already just leave the front doors unlocked to our private property because its less hassle.
rant off.

Because the OP never made mention anywhere of driving around on his property, I wanted to make certain that visitors to the Forum didn't mistake this statement as legal and correct: "...a CHL doesn't change anything for the OP...in his car or on his property...he can carry openly or concealed." If we remove the word "or," it is correct; but not as written. The OP said he would be driving to his property, not on his property.
Thanks.

... his concerns in the post didn't begin til he was at his property...that's what the scenario was-on his property...that's what and where we were talking about, and that's where I was referring to...I think that's perrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrfectly clear...in context, anyways...

I think he should paint it green, and stick a bunch of Customs and Border Protection signs all over it.
That would drive them away.

Re: Property Defense in West TX Question
I too think it is a sad state of affairs...I grew up in the South Texas Brush Country as a teenager. We lived in a not so nice "house" out "on the ranch" less than 70 miles from the border and thus we had unwelcome "visitors" from time to time when we were not at home. Back then, it was mostly farmer-types looking for ranch work, etc. They would get into the house, rummage through things, and make/take food. Believe it or not, they often left semi-valuable items alone. I KNOW that is not the case these days. IF you lived there, it would be a Hobson's choice (either one is a terrible choice, that is) to defend your property with deadly force and upset our current Justice Department or just vacate as safely as possible if the trespass turned really bad. But, if you DON'T live there, and DON'T have a really good lawyer, it probably just ain't worth it unless you catch 'em trying to burn it to the ground or some such...just ask which would cost more: repair the cabin or defend against harming some "special new Americans"? Good luck and I hope you never have to figure this out beyond the theoretical.

Re: Property Defense in West TX Question
Decided to do a fence with LOTS of signs (in both spanish/english) and install some fake cameras and a free standing and NOISY perimeter alarm..
also going to maybe install a camara (inside) which transmits pics with cellular MMS pictures when the camera senses movement or I send a message to the camera from my cell.. cost is $120-180 for one unit.. which is 5v DC with VERY low draw.. should be able to run right off the Solar panel.. without having to leave a big 12v battery sitting there..
AT&T services the area and I just grabbed an AT&T go-phone for this project (with a TX number assigned) in the coming months.. just got to put the ATT SIM card into the camera and program my other cell to receive pics and my email address also..
I will buy the unit and test when I get closer to having the $4400 I need in the bank..

Re: Property Defense in West TX Question
I am not trying to rain on your parade but I will bet money on it that all that stuff just ends up getting stolen or vandalized. The sign thing is kind of funny. It is like thinking a gun buster sign will keep criminals from bringing concealed guns in the store. So a picture of some Hispanic dude and his friends is sent to your cell phone. Now what??? Response times in those areas can be long enough that the guys can drag your cabin off before the mounties arrive. Locked doors will get you busted locks or windows. As a feller who has had many a place in areas along the border,(always for deer hunting), I recommend you leave the door unlocked and don't leave anything that can be carried off by hand. They will sleep in your place and move on. If your not there, all the fences and security in the world will do nothing for you. It might even make some of the local teens think you have something of value in there.YWHIC wrote:Decided to do a fence with LOTS of signs (in both spanish/english) and install some fake cameras and a free standing and NOISY perimeter alarm..

Re: Property Defense in West TX Question
The problem is I still live in PA folks.. but I want something there for when I visit for the next 3 years till I move out permanently.. I don't get more then 3 days off from work at a clip (I am still a temp 3 years into a bull job).. no work=no pay..
I cannot tow a trailer from PA to TX, and back, in (total) 3 days
I cannot afford to STORE my trailer at a U Store it either for $60/month either.. 3rd problem is I currently own a CAR and not a truck so towing something say 30ft long CAN'T HAPPEN..
Hence the 12 x 16 building..
accroding to my surveyor he got stopped last year on the way out after being there just 45 mins..
another couple got stopped 3 x in just over an hour on that road going down to my old 10 acres..
but yes, calling the BP in that area (I have there number already) is what I plan on doing..
I don't plan on leaving anything else there.. just the camera up on the eves on the inside angled DOWN toward the door.. and a solar panel bolted to the roof with a small 27a/h battery also mounted up there in the ceiling.
I am going to TRY and protect whats mine.. this has been an 11 year project with alot of hardships and such..
