CHL and no carry

#1

Post by rbrecount »

I took the CHL class and training so I would have a legal right to carry. I've read here and there about reasons to carry and I'm convinced I should and do. Since then I've met and talked to a number of people who have a CHL and don't. All that time and expense and all those reasons to carry and they don't.

Why not? :confused5

Great Question!
I see no reason to have one and not carry, but that being said, my wife has hers, and has never once carried her gun in a way that MPA wouldn't have also let her carry it.
She just sees no reason to carry it, and I hope she is right.

I know people who live in apartments and houses with no fire extinguisher or smoke alarm.
Dunno why ... :headscratch
I'm not one of those people.

  • Physical discomfort (bad holsters or bulky handguns)
  • Incompatibility with clothing
  • Fear of being "made" and arrested (highly exaggerated, IMHO)
  • Need to go to too many prohibited places (lawyers, for example)
  • Prohibited by employer or school rules
  • Spouse or other family objections
  • Complacency
It's human nature to become alarmed about an immediate threat and then gradually return to a state of complacency. Some people get a CHL and/or buy a weapon because of a threat to themselves or someone close. Then the threat recedes and they don't worry about it any more than shark bites.

There are a variety of reasons. One of the most common is someone who works at a federal facility or a company where you can't have a firearm on company property. So you drive to work armed and then can't bring it on the property. Some people will get a CHL for "emergencies" such as evacuating for a hurricane. Probably most people are just complacent. Others are just "lazy". ;-)

:iagree: I think complacency might be the main reason with most "average" citizens.

I have a brother in-law that got his CHL a few years back mostly on a whim. At first he mainly carried in his car.
Gradually he stopped carrying all together and I'm betting he won't even renew it this time around.

Y'all ain't gotta worry bout me tho....I can't imagine daily life without my sidearm with me at all times.

I wonder what the percentage is. There's not a ton of Texans that even have a CHL, and if most of us know at least one person with a CHL that almost never carries, the number of us that actually go armed daily must be incredibly small.

Count me in for the daily crowd though. :coolgleamA:

...though I don't agree with those who don't carry daily...at least the count is up higher and makes the animals wonder more if they're choosing one who does or doesn't ...

...he might as well have a .45 conniption as a .380 one...

I believe that it is. As a wag, I would say 5-10% at the most. I believe that the forum members are probably more the exception than the rule.
