UPDATE 9:50pm: We have more information in this afternoon's shooting in Southwest Virginia. The Buchanan County Sheriff's Department says four of their deputies were shot and that two have died. We have also learned that the suspect has now been killed. Details are still very limited at this point. We learned more information from Virginia State Police and Sheriff Ray Foster during a news conference this evening.
Here are the facts we have confirmed. Around 2:00pm, the Owner of Rogers Service Center, called about a Larceny in progress. Two Buchanan Sheriff Deputies responded to the call and were on the scene. Sheriff Foster tells News 5, the suspect opened fire, hitting both deputies and that both died from their injuries. The suspect then ran into the woods

Re: Ambush
I hadn't heard of ambush calls in years. They were quite common in the 70's and into the early 80's. We were told to always keep that in mind when we made a call.
Check the area around you first. Look for something not right. Never stand in front of a door when you knock. Stuff like that.

I don't do those things to other people and I require the same of them.
Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you.

Re: Ambush
There was one in Atascosa County in 1999, two deputies killed one at a time, and then a DPS trooper shot -- can't remember if he later died or not, but he was able to radio for help. I think some other officers and a citizen wounded trying to help the trooper. More recently there was one where the son of a police officer swiped his dad's full auto AR-15 and called 911, then ambushed responding officers. Can't remember where it was, but I think it was around San Antonio ("around" meaning within a couple counties).
As a a firefighter/first responder, I regularly find myself knocking on someone's front door in the middle of the night (sometime day, but people call for help more at night, it seems). I always stand to one side or the other. One of my fellow responders, standing directly in front of the door, asked me why I did that. When I told him the look on his face was priceless. I woudl call it "sudden enlightenment."

How long did it take for the implications to sink in?
Sounds like when I was young and chasing a rattlesnake across the buffalo grass in Wyoming. A feller from Louisiana asked me why I stopped when the snake hit that big patch of sagebrush.
My answer was: "Because I ain't stupid."
My answer to the stupid look on his face was: "Out here I have the advantage. In there the snake has the advantage."
It still took him at least two minutes to process that.
