OR: Poacher sentenced to 90 months in the slammer
In Marion County, Oregon (middle of nowhere), a man was found guilty of manslaughter, possession of a firearm by a felon, and other offenses and sentenced to 90 months in prison.
Last year the defendant was hunting without a license when he shot at something moving in the underbrush. He and his buddy couldn't find the "deer."
The "deer" was a man, who was killed.
The defendant "has been arrested 34 times in Oregon, has convictions in other states, has multiple parole violations and charges of failure to appear, and has previously failed to register as a sex offender."

Obviously defendant missed a few weeks of Sunday school.

Only 90 months... 7.5 years... Lives are cheap in Oregon.
I am not a lawyer. This is NOT legal advice.!

Not much of a sentence for the crime if you ask me. What I don't undersytand is why Federal charges aren't brought when this felon was in possesion of a firearm. This is a perfect case. I know the answer to my question BTW.

There is no interest on the part of the Feds to enforce laws that would add an extra prison whammy on low lifes who break firarms laws, but would rather point out that firearms cause crime therefore we need more laws that restrict firearms. The availablity of weopons is the problem not the criminals using them. Enforcing the federal firearms possession by felons doesn't further their goal of vilifying guns and legitimate owners.seamusTX wrote:OK. What is the answer, because I could only guess?

Sort of like Texas Parole Board. Inmates with job skills, education, are far less likely to be paroled than ones who don't. Even though many times their crimes are much worse they are paroled. You read about them all the time in the newspaper. They almost always come back off parole. In order to fulfill the prophesy that we need more prisons in Texas we are all put in danger. Sorry....... I rant!
You only wanted my answer - here it is. They don't enforce the laws because they don't want to.

Thank you for your answer.
Usually state prosecutors will hand off a defendant to the feds when they can, because when the feds lock up a convict, he stays locked up.
The minimum federal sentence for felon in possession is 10 years.
Also the state then does not need to pay for his room, board, and medical and dental care, continuing education, etc.
This particular choirboy needs a prison wing named after him. (Is that insensitive? I'm sure he had a rough childhood and was misunderstood.)
