I think everyone needs to step back and take a couple of deep breaths. Think about the section of class on de-escalation. Some good points have been made, and some toes have been stepped on.

I agree and FWIW, this poor old country boy did perceive some rather snobbish comments to the OP's very legitimate questions. Not everybody has rich parents, rich wife and/or one of those $250k plus per year extended tax credit incomes we've heard so much about. IOW, some of the OP's reception was rather yankee in tone.

since it seems that I am "young, and lazy" I have just walked in the door from my full time job, stopping long enough to go to my 2nd job. I have not "left the building" and I am not "whining" about anything. I simply asked a question and got reamed for asking it. As far as range time, dont have to pay for it, my grandfather has a lease that I can shoot on, and ammo that I can shoot, thats a moot point. As far as not meeting TX requirements, doubtful, no arrests, no child support payments(my wife and my children live with me) there is nothing but the dollar amount keeping me from carrying. Thanks for theses "job offers" but as stated above, I already have 2 and possibly a 3rd if I choose to take it. oh, and I never said that I WAS using public internet, just that I could be.........Thank you all for your time. This is the internet no need to get all bent out of shape because you and another member butted heads.

No one ever said you had to dish out the $240 all at once. Look at my sig line, I did the online application 7 months before I took the class. Just so you know you have 1-2 years to complete the whole process. Online app is good for 1 year, CHL 100 form is good for 2 years.

So pay for the CHL, then later take the class, and when you get some extra dough get your prints, or any order, do what works for you.

At one point in my life if I wanted something I had to beg, borrow or steal it. I remember my wife and I saving for months to buy our daughter a used bike that we were very proud to give her when we could finally buy it. Nowadays we pay someone else to mow the lawn and clean the house because 1) we don't want to and 2) we can afford to pay someone else to do it. That's how life is. When you're young you use your time to get things. When you're older, you use your money.

If you want a CHL, figure out a way to get the money. That's the way I would approach it. It might be next week. It might be a year from now. It just depends on how creative you can be and how hard you work at finding ways to get it.

I'd take pcgizzmo up on his $300 offer, but I don't even want to do those things at my own house any more. Matter of fact, if he's too far away and I'm closer, we might be able to work out something similar.

My advice would be to start by carrying under the motorist protection act and when on your own premises.

When off of your premises you can carry a knife and pepper sprary.

In the meantime slowly save up the money and use the delayed timeline that other posters have described.

I may have overlooked it but AZ has recently changed their laws and are one of the easiest to get now. They will take just about any training as proof of proficiency (even hunters safety given that shooting was involved). It is no longer required to take the class in AZ or to take a "CHL" class at all. Basically you fill out a one page form that is similar to the 4473 in questions and submit your fingerprints. No photo required either.... $60 out the door

It will be moot if the resident license requirement passes but if not it doesn't get much cheaper than that.

It does seem we kinda came across a bit harsh. Not that there were not some good nuggets buried in the advise. I waited for years primarily because of money. (Of course, I didn't know until I applied that there was a veteran discount.) But when money is tight, spending on one thing means not spending on another. When you have young children, that can mean some really hard choices.

Anytime there are two or more gathered together, there is going to be differences of opinion. As the size of that group grows, inevitablely, there will be a few who express those opinions in a harsh (or "elitist") manner. Try to sift through and find the good answers and ignore the few who are irritating. Lots of good info on this forum.
