"Mr. Jones,

An instructor who is expiring in 2011 will receive notification from the department in late January or early February regarding the renewal on their certification. When they receive the notification letter they then will need to complete a renewal application and then will be able to go online and take the test. As far as the proficiency portion goes that has to be a management call. Right now the Department is not requiring proficiency to be taken, but that could change within the next couple of months.

I hope this answers your questions.

Watch for your letters.
So, all that is required is for us to go online and take the test, which is currently identical to the student test.

How are all the instructors who don't follow the TexasCHLForum supposed to get the 2011 legislative updates?

My guess is that the test will be updated to cover the changes -- and the changes will be specified in the updated CHL-16. Which I guess we'll have to read cover-to-cover to figure out what changed. (Other than picking it up here, of course.)

Did the tests change in all previous legislature years?

The new laws will take effect on Sept 1, 2011. The new CHL-16 will typically be available around Jan 2012. There were some updated test questions after the 2007 legislature, but other than that, there have been no really significant changes in the test.

I asked a similar question a few weeks ago. The answer I got from Austin is that they will mail us the info in the next couple of months.

FYI ... this week I just received in the mail my notice that I can start the online instructor certification renewal process. I got my cert. in July 2010, expires December 2011. This letter is nearly identical to the letter I received last week telling me my CHL will expire on my birthday in June 2011.

Guess I'll get on DPS web site in next few weeks. Better dust off the ol' credit card - the state wants more money :totap:

I got mine today as well. I went online verified my information and submitted payment. My receipt indicates that I need to submit the CHL-90 in order to compete the requirements. It does not address any taking any test, nor a range qualification...

Same here, KFP. I don't understand, why do we submit the CHL-90 after we entered all the same info online?

And then on this page it says to just submit the checklist, if required.

This is very confusing.

Hmm, it seems the CHL-90 is concerned about three items...

1) Identification of the Instructor (all info already known by DPS thru the online procedure.)
2) Firearms training taken by Instructor -- used to qualify for the shorter "28-hour" class -- irrelevant for renewals
3) Whether you want to participate in the "Opt-In" program for listing Instructor location, etc -- can be done at any time without this form.

Given all that, it would seem that the CHL-90 is irrelevant to instructor renewals, leaving only the "Checklist". It also seems a bit silly to have to send in the checklist-only, since all that info came from the DPS website. Seems a bit redundant.

I see that there is an online instructors renewal exam, but you need a password to access it. I didn't try the password given when I first got my Instructor's cert.

I thought the idea with having all certs expire in odd years, was to allow the instructors to get the newly legislated law info. That can't be done until the legislative session ends on May 31, plus whatever time it takes for DPS to digest the changes into the system.

Ok. I just got the notification. I went online, signed in, filled out the preliminary stuff including checking off on affidavits and paying the money. I was prompted to download my 'checklist'. Up until this point, the process was exactly like the online application for CHL renewal. The checklist and and receipt I printed departed from the CHL renewal application in that it told me that my check list includes *(1) the checklist itself, and: (2) A completed CHL 90. (the cHL renewal asked for "proof of condition" specifying items that WERE NOT the items that they untimately required.)
I downloaded this form which is a generic instructor application. The unclear portions include Questions 1and 2 "Have you completed a handgun instructor's traing course?" and if so, the title of the course, class date and expiration date.
I have attended the primary course and each recertification since the program began. I do not remember the exact dates. My certificate merely states that it is good until 12/31/11.

Also unclear is question seven-List the firearms courses you have taught in the past. This one MAY be keyed to whether or not you are eligible for the short or full lenght original instructor class-and it may mean something else.

It is not clear, but it appears that they may want a copy of my current certificate.

There was no mention what-so-ever of any written test or shooting demonstration.
I have sent an e-mail request for clarification and will wait to see if they send me any coherent response.

I agree also those questions , I may try to call DPS tomorrow to help unless someone chimes in before then

I got my instructor renewal letter, and I did the online application yesterday. My checklist also listed the CHL-90. I emailed the instructor group at DPS and got this response today:
Mr. Schilling,
No CHL-90 is required on instructor renewals. Please mail only the checklist to the Department. If you like, you can write “instructor renewal” on it.
Thank you.
I don't understand the need to mail in a checklist that has no additional information than what they already have, but it's a small effort for the renewal. I am including a copy of the email with the checklist.

thanks. Just in case, I'm going to give them a little time to answer my e-mail just to see if they say the same thing.
