CHL same as DL?

Hey guys new to the forum,i hope this has'nt been posted before. Was at my bank the other day to make a transaction. Gave the teller my withdrawl/deposit form and my form of ID. I thought i handed her my DL from my wallet but actually gave her my CHL. They do look very much alike. She told me that the bank did not allow CHL as a form of ID. It kinda ticked me off so i asked her why not? All she could say was "it was bank policy". My question is, If i wanted to push the issue could i demand that they take my CHL as legal ID?

This is a state issued ID, like a driver Lic, why not acceptable to the bank I am not sure. A manger would know. I guess once at Bank of America I used both DL and CHL with no issues.

As a private institution I think a bank may have any ID policy they wish to adopt. You are free to bank elsewhere. That said, I'd be a bit put off too.

The State of Texas does not consider it the same as a DL.

They show three tiers of identification: Primary, Secondary, and Supporting.

A valid CHL is listed under supporting.

I work at a supermarket and when they sent us to alcohol training, they spend several hours training us all about the appearance of a TX driver license. There are several other legal forms of ID like a CHL, military ID, passport, Mexico, green card, out of state ID, homeland security, whatever; and they just don't have the time to train all their employees to identify all of those types of legal forms of identification.

With a TX driver license policy only the entity has the defense that their employees have been extensively trained to identify a proper ID. I've had several argue with their military IDs and passports, but in the end they all had a TX driver license also.

If it was valid ID in and of itself, GC 411.205 wouldn't require us to display a "driver's license or identification certificate" in addition to the CHL. The CHL would be enough.

If a business has a legitimate need for ID, I usually show my passport card.

Gotta get me one of them.... It's like Federal super-duper, I'm a citizen, and the US of A says I am, and like lots of ID numbers...but no address....

Have a passport book, but for the Wal-Mart and 7-11 "police", it just doesn't pull the weight of a Passport Card, or Consular Matricular de Mexico, or Massachusetts Liquor ID.

No address. $30 for ten years (if you already have a passport book.) Every bit as ugly as the new Texas DL and CHL designs.

OK, my NEXUS card has it beat for convenience, especially now that NEXUS can be used at the Global Entry kiosks. But the NEXUS card looks boring.

Of course, I now see the word "bar" after dive. As a kid, a low life bar was just called a dive...and we knew what it was without elaboration. Are we so slow we need further explanation? Yes, I'm being cranky...

The other one that bugs me (for us diver types) is BCD. When I was a hard core diver, the initials for this device was an easy BC for Buoyancy Compensator, now it's stand for Buoyancy Compensator DEVICE. Whoa, that additional letter is REALLY necessary for complete understanding. Yeah, sure...

So I guess if the illegal mexican goes down to the local Fiesta supermarket and gets them some up to date documents and goes to get a drivers license, that license is more valid than my CHL which has gone under FBI scrutiny???

If I accidentally displayed my CHL as identification instead of my DL and the business objected to this form of ID. I would simply reply "My bad" hand them the proper ID and go on about my day. To me its not worth getting my blood pressure up over something that was my error in the first place. Thats just me though.

Passport book...as opposed to passport card...they make them now. They're both passports, hence the qualifier book.

IDs are a funny thing. Going through the airport awhile ago when asked for ID by the TSA I thought I would just use my TWIC card. They look at it and said it wasn't acceptable. The funny thing was you have to have a FBI background check and be thumb printed for one, plus they are issued by the TSA.

When I was in Florida a bank excepted my HAM license as ID, I guess it depends on which way the wind is blowing that day when it comes to acceptable IDs.

Haven't received my CHL yet so I don't know who accepts it.


TWIC - Transportation Worker Identification Credential

One part of the deal I had to cut with TSA to get my name off the No-Fly list was to agree to use my passport for identification when I fly (there is a slight problem with my TX DL). Because of this and the fact that I travel often for work, I usually have my passport handy. When asked for ID (except for a traffic stop where I am asked for my DL), i usually give them my passport and that raises some eyebrows at times. I even had a clerk try to tell me that a passport wasn't a valid form of ID.

I've taken to providing only my Texas ID for Identification purposes. The only time I'll provide a Driver's license is for driving-related issues.

I know, I know...all the same information, cross references, etc. It just makes me feel better. Especially when some clerk tries to write down my DL# when checking my ID for a "controlled" purchase, or credit-card swipe.

Well, that, and too many times I go into buildings late at night to do work, and have to provide an ID for them to keep while I check out a key or an access badge...since CHL isn't valid by itself (for the official business) and I just might want to go get a pizza at 2AM if I'm still working....this way I can keep legal ID on my person, while getting what I need from the buildings.
