The lone surveyor who fired his gun fired at least 13
rounds at the bad guys since the story states "more than 12"
casings were found on the ground.

So much for the old saying that a self defense encounter will
result in "3 rounds in 3 seconds at 3 feet."

To paraphrase the old cigarette smoking phrase
"If you got 'em, shoot em." :-)
